Pogba Faces New Injury Setback at Monaco Training Camp
Paul Pogba’s attempt to relaunch his career at AS Monaco has hit another painful snag, this time on the quiet training pitches of St George’s Park.
In the middle of a passing drill at the club’s pre-season camp, the 2018 World Cup winner suddenly cried out and went to ground. Play stopped instantly. According to Maxi Foot, medical staff sprinted over and, moments later, two members of Monaco’s backroom team were helping him from the pitch. Team-mates watched on, concern written all over their faces.
It was supposed to be a gentle step forward. Pogba had only just rejoined full group sessions after a long, stuttering spell on the sidelines, his Monaco career so far reduced to flashes and false starts. A brief pre-season appearance had hinted at progress. Then this.
Head coach Filipe Luís had spoken recently of his optimism, of finally being able to weave a fit, experienced Pogba into his plans. At 33, the Frenchman still offers vision, range of passing, and a presence few in the squad can match. But he also carries a body that has been through too many stop-start seasons, too many rehab programmes, too many comebacks that never quite stuck.
The timing is brutal for Monaco. The club is deep into its preparations for the new Ligue 1 campaign, with the coaching staff looking to lock in structure and rhythm. Higher up, the hierarchy had already flagged this pre-season as a key test, a period that would help shape decisions on Pogba’s long-term future at the club. They wanted answers about his durability. Instead, they have another question mark.
For now, everything pauses for the scans. Only the medical results will reveal whether this was a minor scare or the beginning of yet another long lay-off. Until then, there is only an anxious wait — for Pogba, for Luís, and for a club that had been hoping to finally see what their high-profile midfielder could offer over a sustained run.
On the training ground, the reality bites quickly. Monaco’s staff must redraw their midfield plans again, at least in the short term, and prepare for the opening fixtures without one of their most recognisable names. Squad depth, rotation, and balance in the middle of the pitch suddenly jump to the top of the agenda.
Pogba, meanwhile, faces a familiar, draining routine: treatment tables, assessments, and the mental grind of starting over yet again. The talent has never been in doubt. The question, once more, is whether his body will let him show it when Monaco need him most.
