Pape Gueye Declares Senegal Boycott Until Coach Pape Thiaw is Sacked
Pape Gueye has drawn a hard line in the sand. Not for his club. For his country.
In the raw aftermath of Senegal’s dramatic 2026 World Cup exit to Belgium, the 27-year-old midfielder announced he will not wear the Teranga Lions shirt again while Pape Thiaw remains head coach.
The emotions were still boiling when Gueye went public. Senegal had been within touching distance of the last 16, two goals to the good and seemingly in control, before the night unraveled.
Belgium struck twice late on to drag the tie into extra time, the momentum ripped away from the African champions. In the added period, a Youri Tielemans penalty completed the turnaround and sent Senegal out, a brutal swing from command to collapse.
Gueye headed straight to social media after the final whistle and did not hide his fury. He wrote: “I’ll be back to give you a few words regarding elimination… but I announce today that as long as it’s this technical staff I’ll take a break from the selection.”
No ambiguity. No softening of the blow. For now, his international future is on hold, tied directly to the fate of Thiaw and his staff.
The fallout from a World Cup exit is often messy. This one now comes with a clear ultimatum from one of Senegal’s key midfielders, and a question that will hang over the federation: who gives ground first?
