Ousmane Diomandé Joins Nottingham Forest for €40 Million
Sporting Portugal are about to bank another huge cheque. Nottingham Forest have struck a deal for Ousmane Diomandé, with the Portuguese champions set to receive €40 million for the 22-year-old centre-back, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
For Sporting, it is a calculated cash-out. For Forest, it is a statement of intent.
From €7.5m gamble to €40m sale
Diomandé’s rise in Lisbon has been rapid. Sporting only brought him in from FC Midtjylland in January 2023, paying between €7.5 million and €12.5 million and agreeing to a 20 per cent sell-on clause for the Danish club. Eighteen months later, they are flipping him for more than three times their initial outlay, even after factoring in Midtjylland’s cut.
At the start of this year, Sporting moved to protect their asset, handing Diomandé a new contract running to mid-2030 and inserting an €80 million release clause. On paper, he was locked down for the long haul. In reality, €40 million has proved enough to open the door.
The profit is still enormous. And it drops straight into a summer already defined by big exits in green and white.
Medical next, five-year deal waiting
Diomandé is scheduled to fly to England as early as Saturday for his medical. If that goes to plan, the right-footed defender will sign a five-year contract with Forest, tying him to the club through what should be the prime of his career.
At 1.90 metres, he brings the kind of physical presence Premier League managers covet. Forest are not just buying height, though. They are investing in a modern centre-back: aggressive in duels, comfortable stepping out, and young enough to grow into the role.
The plan is clear. Diomandé is expected to slot into a back three alongside Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo dos Santos, giving Forest a tall, combative, and technically capable defensive line.
Familiar faces and a new spine at Forest
Diomandé will not walk into a dressing room full of strangers. He will link up with compatriot Ibrahim Sangaré, the former PSV midfielder who already anchors Forest’s midfield.
The club have been busy reshaping the spine of the team. Earlier this summer, they snapped up holding midfielder Xaver Schlager on a free transfer from RB Leipzig, a shrewd piece of business for a player of his experience and work rate. They also paid €20 million to bring in attacking midfielder Gustavo Sá from FC Famalicão, adding creativity further up the pitch.
Now comes the defensive pillar. With Diomandé’s arrival, Forest’s recruitment drive has a clear pattern: strengthen through the middle, add power, add personality, and build a squad that can withstand the demands of another Premier League campaign.

While Forest build, Sporting count. Diomandé’s move is their fourth major windfall of a remarkable window.

Those three deals alone would define most clubs’ summers. Sporting have gone further.
Alisson Santos’ permanent move to Napoli brought in another €16.5 million, while Diogo Travassos’ transfer to SC Braga added €5.5 million to the balance sheet. Layer Diomandé’s €40 million on top and the numbers become eye-watering.
This is a club that has mastered the art of buying, developing, and selling at the right time. The squad will need rebuilding, but the financial firepower is undeniable.
