Nottingham Forest Sign £34.3m Ousmane Diomande as Defensive Pillar
Nottingham Forest have made a major statement at the back, sealing the £34.3m signing of Ivory Coast centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting on a four-year deal.
This is not a committee signing. This is Oliver Glasner’s defender.
The Forest head coach pushed hard for Diomande, having tried to take him to Crystal Palace during his previous spell in the Premier League. This time, after weeks of negotiations, Forest got it done, agreeing a fixed fee of around €40m for the 22-year-old and handing him a central role in their rebuild.
A serial winner arrives at the City Ground
Diomande does not arrive as a project. He arrives as a champion.
Across four seasons with Sporting, he played 132 games, scored seven goals and helped deliver two Primeira Liga titles. Last season he anchored a side that not only completed a domestic double in Portugal but also drove into the knockout stages of the Champions League, giving him a taste of the kind of high-pressure nights Forest crave.
On the international stage, his rise has been just as sharp. Diomande owns 15 caps for Ivory Coast and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, ending an eight-year wait for the Elephants. He also featured at this summer’s World Cup, a marker of how quickly he has climbed into the elite bracket of young defenders.
No wonder Forest were prepared to stretch.

Diomande’s first words as a Forest player carried the tone of someone who understands what he is walking into at the City Ground.
“I am very happy to be here. It is a historic club, and it motivates me to join such a club,” he said. “I believe we can achieve very good things this season and I am looking forward to meeting the players and head coach.
“I will give my best and all I can to help the team. I cannot wait to meet the supporters at the City Ground and together we can have a good season.”
The message is clear: he is not coming to hide in a low block. He is coming to lead.
Forest get their profile defender
Inside the club, Diomande fits a very specific brief. Chief football officer George Syrianos made that plain.
“We have been very clear on the profile of player we want to add to the squad, so we are excited to welcome Ousmane to the club,” he said. “He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title-winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest.
“Ousmane is a powerful, commanding defender, and arrives here with a winning mentality. He shares the same ambition for success we have, and we are excited to see the impact he can have in a Forest shirt.”
Powerful. Commanding. Winning mentality. Those are not throwaway words when you look at the scale of change around him.
A squad in flux
Diomande’s arrival headlines a busy window at Forest, one that has already seen serious churn on both sides of the ledger.
- In come Ousmane Diomande for £34.3m, Boyd Fraser from Hearts, Mason Ayre from Glentoran, Blaine McClure from Rangers, and three free transfers in Xaver Schlager from RB Leipzig, Grady McDonnell from Club Brugge and Kasen Brown from Manchester City.
- Out go some big and familiar names. Elliot Anderson has joined Manchester City in a £116m deal, the standout departure of the summer. David Carmo has moved to Olympiacos, Joe Gardner to Falkirk and Cormac Daly to Hearts, with Angus Gunn heading to San Jose Earthquakes.
- A cluster of players have left on frees: Ben Hammong to Boston United, Justin Hanks to Solihull Moors, Danny Anisjko to Chesterfield and Cormac Daly to Hearts, while Jota Silva has joined Olympiacos on loan. Willy Boly, Stefan Ortega, Shae Cahill and Esapa Osong have all been released.
The dressing room Diomande walks into will feel new, lighter, younger, hungrier. That is by design.
Glasner’s blueprint takes shape
Glasner’s teams do not sit still. They press, they squeeze space, they ask their centre-backs to defend high and aggressively. To do that in the Premier League, you need a defender who relishes the duel, who can live on the halfway line and still look comfortable.
Diomande has done it in Portugal, in the Champions League, and under the pressure of international tournaments. Forest are betting heavily that he can now do it under the floodlights and scrutiny of England’s top flight.
He will not be eased in gently. A £34.3m fee, a changing squad, a demanding coach and a fanbase that knows what a proper defender looks like at the City Ground – it all points in one direction.
