Neymar Inspires Santos to Sudamericana Comeback
Santos spent the first half on the ropes at Vila Belmiro. Two players down, a goal behind, VAR cutting into every celebration. On a tense night in the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, they still found a way.
Macará struck first. And early.
Shock start, early injuries, Neymar turns the tide
With just five minutes gone, Santos switched off at the back. Luan Peres allowed space to open, Willian Arão didn’t clean up, and Franco Posse punished them, putting the visitors 1-0 up and silencing the home crowd.
From there, Santos had to chase both the scoreline and their own rhythm. The superior technique was there on paper. On the pitch, it took time to appear.
Gabigol began to drag the team forward, finding pockets, creating danger, forcing Macará to retreat. But every time Santos seemed to settle, another problem arrived.

Neymar refused to let that happen.
The No. 10, already a magnet for kicks and attention, changed his boots mid-half and then gave the crowd a scare when he slipped and felt pain around his left knee. He stayed on, though, and moments later produced the moment that changed everything.
A precise pass from Neymar into the path of Gabigol. One touch, one finish. The No. 9 hit his 100th goal in a Santos shirt, and Vila roared back to life.
It was only Santos’ third win in 14 matches this year with Neymar and Gabigol both starting, but the chemistry between them finally clicked when it mattered.
VAR steals the spotlight
Santos came out after the break with purpose. They pressed higher, moved the ball quicker, and put Macará under sustained pressure.
Gabigol twice thought he had completed the comeback on his own.
The first “goal” came after a clever dummy from Neymar opened the space. The second followed a perfect through ball from the No. 10 that sliced the defense apart. Both finishes were clinical. Both were ruled out for offside after VAR intervention.
Each decision cut the noise inside Vila. Each one added a layer of frustration to a night that could easily have spiraled.
But Santos kept coming.

Pinned back, Macará defended with commitment and tried to feed off Santos’ anxiety. The home side, carrying the weight of a difficult season and the pressure of knockout football, needed someone to break the tension.
Again, it was Neymar.
From a corner, he caught the visiting defense sleeping. The delivery was sharp, unexpected, and Willian Arão attacked it to score his first goal in a Santos shirt. From villain in the opening minutes to match-winner in the second half, his night flipped in an instant.
Santos had turned it around. 2-1. Deserved on the balance of play, but far from comfortable.
They were the better side across the 90 minutes, yet they leave the first leg with only a narrow advantage and plenty still to do.
The road ahead: Bellavista, a relegation fight, and a season on edge
The second leg is set for next Thursday (20) at Estadio Bellavista. Santos travel with a slim edge and the cushion of knowing a draw will be enough to see them through.
Macará’s task is clear: win by at least two goals to qualify in regular time. A one-goal victory pushes the tie to penalties.
Waiting in the next round will be Atlético or Red Bull Bragantino. Galo hold a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Bragança, adding another layer of intrigue to the bracket.
Before Santos think about that, reality bites at home. They now pivot back to the Brasileirão, where they are the team currently opening the relegation zone. On Sunday (16), they go to São Januário to face 18th-placed Vasco in a direct fight near the bottom.
Neymar and Gabigol delivered when it counted in the Sudamericana. The question now is whether this comeback can be the spark that drags Santos out of a season spent flirting with the edge.
