Neymar's Birthday Faux Pas Sparks Debate Over Poker at Cake Table
Family parties are supposed to be the safest place in the world for a superstar. No pressure, no whistles, just balloons, cake and phones raised for the “Happy Birthday” video.
At Mel’s celebration – the daughter of Neymar and Bruna Biancardi – that script held up right until the candles were lit.
Then the cameras caught something else.
Poker at “Happy Birthday”
It was the key moment of the party. Family and friends huddled around the cake, voices ready for the traditional “Happy Birthday” chorus, phones pointed at the baby and her parents.
Everyone sang.
Neymar stared at his screen.
While the room focused on Mel, the forward was focused on a poker game on his phone. Just a few seconds, a brief distraction, but enough for someone to record it and send it into the social media bloodstream.
The clip didn’t just show a dad at a birthday. It showed one of the world’s most famous footballers, head down, playing poker at the exact moment his daughter’s candles were being blown out.
That was all it took for a family video to turn into a public debate.
“Multitasking” or major red flag?
Once the images hit social networks, the split was immediate.
Some users laughed it off. For them, it was Neymar being Neymar – a man who lives with a phone in his hand, able to juggle a family party and a quick game on an app without seeing any problem. In that reading, he was present, he was there, and if he wanted to tap a few buttons while the song played, so be it.
Others saw something completely different.
For the more critical voices, the timing crossed a line. Playing poker while everyone else is singing “Happy Birthday” to your baby? That was enough for some to call it a red flag, a sign that his priorities were skewed at a moment that should have been entirely about his daughter.
From there, the conversation escalated. Some comments went as far as to link the scene to a potentially problematic relationship with gambling. That leap remains firmly in the realm of opinion, with no evidence beyond that short clip. But on social media, a few seconds of video can be all people need to build a narrative.
Old video, new spotlight
The scene itself is not new. What brought it back to life was another piece of content: a video now circulating that shows Neymar’s ex-partner and his current partner cooking together. That unexpected pairing triggered curiosity and, with it, a wave of users digging up old moments involving the Brazilian star.
The poker-at-the-party clip resurfaced as part of that wave, detached from its original context but loaded with fresh judgment.
At the same time, Neymar’s current situation adds fuel to the conversation. He is sidelined with injury, away from the pitch and under a different kind of spotlight.
The forward, now back at Santos after his return to Brazilian football, extended his contract with the club through December 2026. Early in September, during a match against Palmeiras, he suffered a Grade 2 injury to his right hamstring.
Santos’ medical report set a recovery window of four to eight weeks. That timeline rules him out of the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals against Atlético Mineiro and keeps him in rehab instead of on the grass.
So while Neymar works his way back from injury, a few seconds of birthday footage have become the latest flashpoint in the never-ending scrutiny around him.
On the pitch, his return date is marked in calendars. Off it, the question lingers: when he does come back, will the football be enough to drown out the noise?
