Newcastle Faces Full-Back Crisis Ahead of Liverpool Opener
Newcastle United are running out of runway before the season even starts.
With less than two weeks until Liverpool arrive on Tyneside for the Premier League opener, Matthias Jaissle is trying to piece together a back line that has been pulled apart by injury and uncertainty. Training sessions are ticking away. So are options at full-back.
Hall back in the mix – and on the market?
Lewis Hall’s situation offers a rare sliver of good news, even if it comes with a caveat.
The left-back left Newcastle’s training camp in Spain in early August as a precaution, raising fears that another defender had gone down at the worst possible time. Those fears have eased. Hall has already featured in the friendly against Everton at Murrayfield on Wednesday and, fitness-wise, is on course to be available against Liverpool.
Whether he is still a Newcastle player by then is a different question.
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported before the Everton game that Hall was scheduled to resume training on Tyneside and could appear in Newcastle’s final preseason fixtures at St James’ Park. The club confirmed that Hall, along with two other players, had been working on fitness at The Knox, the training centre, before stepping back into match action.
For Jaissle, Hall’s minutes now are vital. Newcastle need him sharp, not just present, when Mohamed Salah and company roll into town.
Miley boost, Livramento blow
The picture on the opposite flank is far less encouraging.
According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope and Simon Jones, Newcastle expect young midfielder Lewis Miley to win his race to be fit for the season opener after recovering from a broken leg. That is a significant lift for a squad that has already had its summer disrupted by injuries and transfer noise.
The same report, though, underlines the bad news at right-back.
Tino Livramento is set to miss the August 23 clash with Liverpool as he continues his rehabilitation from the calf injury that forced him out of England’s World Cup squad. The 23-year-old is currently in the United States, working through his recovery programme away from Newcastle.
Hope and Jones report that the club view a return on the second weekend of the campaign, at Tottenham, as a realistic target. If that timeline holds, Livramento will sit out the Liverpool game but could be back in contention when Newcastle travel to north London on Matchday 2.
For a manager trying to build rhythm and structure in preseason, that is a clear, immovable absence on the teamsheet.
Transfer urgency rising
Newcastle were already in the market for full-backs. This latest update only cranks up the urgency.
With Livramento ruled out for Liverpool and Hall still playing catch-up on fitness while his future remains the subject of speculation, Jaissle heads into the final stretch of preseason short of reliable, match-ready options in the wide defensive areas.
The club had been exploring reinforcements at both full-back positions before the window closes. Now, those discussions take on a sharper edge. Any delay risks Newcastle going into a high-tempo opener against Liverpool relying on patched-together solutions and players still searching for rhythm.
For now, the likely scenario is clear: no Livramento for Liverpool, Hall asked to shoulder a heavy load at left-back, and a squad hoping that the last few preseason sessions are enough to weld a makeshift back line into something that can withstand one of the league’s most dangerous attacks.
The countdown to August 23 has started. Newcastle’s full-back situation will help decide whether the season begins with a statement – or a scramble.
