Napoli Faces Setback as Marianucci Suffers Serious Knee Injury

Napoli’s summer under new head coach Massimiliano Allegri has taken an early and painful hit. Luca Marianucci, the young centre-back hoping to stake his claim in pre-season, has been ruled out for an extended spell with a serious left knee injury.

The 22-year-old was introduced as a substitute in last weekend’s 1-1 friendly draw against Celta Vigo, only to last 25 minutes before collapsing in clear discomfort. Any initial hope of a minor knock quickly vanished once the scans came back.

Napoli confirmed the worst after a series of diagnostic tests at Pineta Grande Hospital. In an official medical note, the club revealed that Marianucci had suffered “a high-grade medial collateral ligament injury to the left knee” following a contusion and sprain in that Celta Vigo match.

For the player, the timing could hardly be more cruel.

Marianucci had returned to Naples after spending the second half of last season on loan at Torino, determined to force his way into the Partenopei’s first-team plans. Since arriving from Empoli in 2025, the towering defender has managed just two appearances for Napoli. This pre-season was meant to be his audition. Instead, it has turned into a long rehabilitation.

The injury also lands squarely on Allegri’s desk.

Still in the early days of imposing his ideas and building a reliable backline for the 2026-27 campaign, the coach suddenly finds his defensive options thinner than planned. Marianucci was expected to provide depth and competition in central defence; now that role will have to be filled by others as the season approaches at speed.

Napoli’s medical staff will track his progress closely in the coming weeks before deciding whether surgery is necessary or if a conservative rehabilitation programme can suffice. Either way, the wording of the diagnosis points to a prolonged absence and a careful, staged return.

On the pitch, there is no time for sympathy.

Allegri must quickly redraw his plans before the Serie A opener against Genoa on August 22, the first real test of his new regime. Eight days later, Napoli walk out at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for their home debut of the season against Como.

By then, the coach will hope his reshaped defence has found its feet — even as one of its most promising young pieces watches the start of the campaign from the sidelines.
