Ferland Mendy, Marco Asensio, Eder Militao, Aurelien Tchouameni, Thiago Pitarch, Rodrygo and Endrick are all unavailable due to physical problems. It is a list long enough to alter a season’s early rhythm, never mind a single match.
The situation has forced Mourinho to dip into the academy. Mario Rivas, Cestero and Alexis Ceria have been promoted to bolster the numbers and give the bench some life. Their presence tells its own story: Madrid are starting a title chase with kids filling out the squad while established names recover.
Espanyol have issues of their own, but nothing on that scale. Cabrera is suspended, while Javi Puado and Kike Garcia miss out through injury. Important absences, yes, but not enough to change the feel of their strong start.
A star-studded XI despite the injuries
Even with so many players sidelined, the probable Madrid XI still drips with talent. Marca report that Mourinho is expected to send out:
Courtois; Arnold, Konate, Huijsen, Carreras; Valverde, Bernardo Silva, Brahim Diaz; Arda Guler, Vinicius, Kylian Mbappe.
It is a side built to dominate the ball and punish in transition. Vinicius and Mbappe on the break is a terrifying prospect for any back line, while Bernardo Silva and Brahim Diaz between the lines offer control and craft. Arda Guler brings the unpredictability that can crack open a compact defence.
The question is not whether Madrid have the quality. They do. The question is how quickly Mourinho can fuse these pieces into a team that looks like his, under competitive pressure, away from home, with several key options missing.
Title hunger meets early-season belief
Madrid enter this campaign with a clear objective: take back the La Liga crown after watching Barcelona lift the trophy in each of the last two seasons. That stings inside the Bernabeu. Mourinho has been brought back to change that storyline, to restore edge and authority in the domestic race.
Espanyol see something different. They see an opportunity. A big scalp, early on, to fuel belief that their 3-0 win over Levante was not a one-off. A positive result against Madrid would turn a good start into a statement.
