AC Milan’s summer is starting to feel like a delicate balancing act: finding the next creator while bracing for the possible loss of their biggest individual talent.
At the heart of it all sits a familiar name.
Brahim, the old flame
According to Corriere della Sera, Milan have turned their attention back to Brahim Diaz, the Real Madrid playmaker who knows San Siro’s floodlights better than most recent loanees.
They have just watched one target slip away. Konstantinos Karetsas, the highly rated Greek talent at Genk, chose Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth €33 million, forcing the Rossoneri to pivot. Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri and Roma’s Matias Soule remain on the shortlist, but inside the club there is a clear preference: a player who has already proved he can handle the shirt.
Diaz did more than that between 2020 and 2023. On loan from Madrid, he played 124 matches for Milan, scored 18 goals and provided 15 assists. He was not just a number on a teamsheet; he was one of the creative sparks in the side that dragged the club back to the top of Serie A, helping deliver the 2022 Scudetto.
Bringing him back would mean reuniting with a player who understands Stefano Pioli’s demands, the weight of expectation at San Siro, and the tactical nuances of operating between the lines in Italy. It would also mean negotiating with a Real Madrid hierarchy that tied him down until 2027, fully aware of his value on the European market.
Juventus had explored a move for Diaz earlier in the window, only to turn their attention to Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Alaibegovic. That leaves Milan with a cleaner run at their former No. 10, but not necessarily an easier one. Madrid hold the cards, and they know Milan’s need is growing by the day.
Leao: seven years and a crossroads
That need is driven by a looming storm on the left flank. Inside Milanello, every conversation eventually circles back to one name: Rafael Leao.
The Portuguese forward has made it clear he feels his seven-year cycle at Milan is reaching its natural end. For a long time, his eyes were fixed on England or Spain. A move to the Premier League or La Liga was the dream. The market, so far, has not answered. No concrete offers, no bidding war, no blockbuster move.
So the picture has shifted. With Europe’s traditional giants standing still, Leao has started to consider a different route: Turkey.
Galatasaray are ready to test Milan’s resolve. Unlike rivals Fenerbahce, they can offer Champions League football, a powerful card in any negotiation with a player who has grown used to the big stage. For a club eager to make a statement, landing Leao would be exactly that.
The winger likes the idea. The numbers, though, are heavy. He is asking for a salary in excess of €10 million, a figure that underlines both his self-belief and the scale of the commitment required. Galatasaray must decide how far they are willing to stretch; Milan must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice.
On one point, the Rossoneri are unyielding: they want a permanent sale. Loan proposals are not welcome. If Leao leaves, it must be for good and for a fee that allows them to reshape the squad with conviction.
A summer that could redefine Milan
All of this leaves Milan staring at a decisive few weeks. Lose Leao and they part with one of Serie A’s most devastating one‑on‑one attackers. Bring back Brahim Diaz and they restore a familiar heartbeat to their attacking midfield.
The club’s hierarchy knows it cannot afford to get this wrong. The wrong exit, the wrong replacement, and the Scudetto of 2022 starts to feel further away than it should.
The right call, though, and a new Milan might emerge from the same fault line that threatens to break this one apart.
