Mbekezeli Mbokazi's Season Not Over Yet
Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s season is not over yet.
The Chicago Fire defender, initially ruled out for the year with a torn thigh muscle, could still force his way back in time for the MLS Cup Playoffs in late November.
The injury, suffered in late July, was first viewed as a crushing, season-ending blow for both player and club. Mbokazi had been one of the Fire’s defensive anchors, a constant presence at the back and a key reason their back line looked stable and assured. His form earned him a place in the MLS All Star game and growing recognition across the league.
Then came the World Cup. Wearing Bafana colours, he went from promising prospect to breakout name. He helped South Africa reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history, standing out on the global stage and returning to Chicago with his reputation significantly enhanced.
That momentum seemed to evaporate with one tear in late July.
Now the picture has changed.
Speaking after the Fire’s 1-1 draw away to the New York Red Bulls, coach Gregg Berhalter rowed back on his earlier assessment of the defender’s fate this year.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” Berhalter admitted. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
No guarantees. But hope, where there was none a month ago.
For Chicago, even the chance of Mbokazi returning in time for a playoff push is significant. A fit and sharp Mbokazi would give Berhalter a proven organiser at the back, a player who has already shown he can handle pressure on both domestic and international stages.
The timing, though, creates a very different story for Bafana.
South Africa face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15. Those fixtures fall just days before Mbokazi might realistically be ready to rejoin Chicago’s matchday squad, assuming his rehab continues on its current trajectory.
If the updated timeline holds, it arrives too late for his country. Bafana will likely have to navigate those qualifiers without the defender who helped carry them beyond the World Cup group stage.
For the Fire, the equation is simpler: keep him on track, get him fit, and hope that when the playoffs arrive, the man who rose on the World Cup stage can steady their back line one more time this year.
