Marcus Rashford's Manchester United Return in Poland
Marcus Rashford is poised to pull on a Manchester United shirt for the first time since December 2024 – and the stage could hardly be more intriguing for a pre-season friendly.
Across the halfway line in Poland will stand Ruben Amorim, now in charge of AC Milan, the coach who sidelined Rashford and effectively pushed him towards the loan spells that followed. It’s only a warm-up game, but the subplot writes itself.
Rashford’s reset
Michael Carrick’s squad head to Poland for their final summer outing, and this trip has the feel of a reset for Rashford at his boyhood club. After stints at Aston Villa and Barcelona, the forward is back in United colours and, this weekend, back in the matchday squad.
He stayed in the stands on Wednesday night in Dublin, watching the 1-1 draw with Leeds United. Carrick made it clear that the timing, not the talent, kept him out.
“Marcus, Licha and Kobbie only came back a couple of days ago so they're not quite ready but we can have them for the weekend,” Carrick said, grouping Rashford with Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo as the late returnees.
The coaching staff have been pushing them hard on the training pitch.
“We trained hard, the boys who came in, Marcus, Kobbie and Licha have trained really hard and we'll have a recovery day tomorrow.
“We’ll all recover tomorrow, train Friday and prepare for the game on Saturday [against Milan]. Again, we'll get the balance right of minutes."
That balance points towards a substitute role in Poland. Rashford, Martinez and Mainoo are expected to come off the bench, their minutes carefully managed in the same way United handled those who went deep into the World Cup.
Selection puzzles for Carrick
While Rashford’s potential return grabs the headlines, Carrick has several other decisions to make.
Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko are all doubtful after missing the Leeds game, leaving gaps to fill and combinations to test. In midfield, though, there is the tantalising prospect of Bruno Fernandes and summer signing Youri Tielemans starting together for the first time. If Carrick wants an early look at his creative axis for the new season, this is the moment.
Up front, the picture is less settled. Matheus Cunha made his first appearance of pre-season in midweek, adding another option to a forward line where Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo have been operating off lone striker Bryan Mbeumo. Whether Carrick sticks with that structure or hands Cunha a bigger role will say plenty about his attacking plans.
An edge to a friendly
Strip it back and it’s just a pre-season fixture between two European heavyweights, the final tune-up before competitive football returns. But Rashford facing Amorim again adds an edge that friendlies rarely carry.
For United, this weekend in Poland is about rhythm, fitness and fine-tuning. For Rashford, it feels like the first real step towards proving his future still lies at Old Trafford.
