Marcus Rashford's Journey to World Cup 2026
Marcus Rashford has barely had time to catch his breath in Barcelona before the next chapter of his career swings open. Left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad and written off in some quarters, the forward will now board a plane to the United States, Canada and Mexico as part of England’s World Cup 2026 plans.
His response was immediate and emotional.
After Thomas Tuchel named him in the squad, Rashford took to Instagram with a message that read: “Special thanks to Unai, Hansi, Thomas, Aston Villa, Barcelona and England for believing in me when things got tough.”
No mention of Manchester United.
Social media did the rest.
The omission of his parent club lit up timelines, with some reading it as a pointed snub towards United after a turbulent spell at Old Trafford and a career‑reviving loan at Camp Nou. Rashford, thriving again under Hansi Flick at Barcelona after a strong season in La Liga, suddenly found himself defending not his form, but his wording.
The forward moved quickly to shut the noise down. On X, he clarified that the post was never intended as a dig at United or their supporters.
“To make my IG story clear. It’s not a dig of any sort! I’m a MU supporter, and that remains. I was showing gratitude to the clubs and coaches that I have worked with over the past 18 months, they have played a big role in this call up,” he wrote.
That 18‑month stretch has been turbulent and transformative. A high‑profile dip at United, questions about his future, then a move to Barcelona where Flick and the club’s staff helped rebuild his confidence and edge. The thanks to Unai and Hansi underlined how much that environment has mattered. So did the nod to Aston Villa, another key staging post in his recent journey.
World Cup 2026
Now comes the biggest stage of all.
England, with Rashford back in the fold, will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in the group phase of World Cup 2026. A forward once seen as drifting is suddenly central again, carrying the weight of a revived reputation into a tournament that could redefine his standing for club and country alike.
