Manchester United's Summer Plans Impacted by Ugarte Injury

Manchester United’s summer plans have been jolted by Manuel Ugarte’s knee injury – and the consequences stretch far beyond one devastated midfielder.

The Uruguay international damaged knee ligaments during his country’s miserable World Cup campaign, limping out of a 1-0 defeat to Spain that capped a winless group-stage exit. The Athletic reports he now faces an “extended period” on the sidelines, a blow that has forced United to redraw parts of their transfer blueprint.

Ugarte sale shelved – but midfield rebuild rolls on

Before the tournament, United had earmarked Ugarte as one of the sacrifices in a major reshaping of their midfield. His form had not convinced, and the plan was clear: move him on, free up funds and a squad slot, and accelerate the rebuild in the centre of the pitch.

That sale is now effectively off the table. An injured player with a serious knee problem is not going anywhere, and United will keep him for at least another season.

Crucially, that does not mean the club are stepping off the accelerator in midfield. Far from it.

Ederson is already through the door, and United still intend to bring in at least one more midfielder, quite possibly two. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes sits at the top of their list, with David Ornstein describing him as the “immediate priority” while confirming that other options remain under consideration. The engine room overhaul is still live. Ugarte’s injury has not derailed that.

The knock-on effect comes elsewhere.

Rashford’s future twists again

United’s inability to cash in on Ugarte tightens the financial picture in other areas, and that is where Marcus Rashford re-enters the spotlight.

The club had been exploring the market for a new left-sided forward. Now, according to Ornstein, that part of the plan is under threat. Failure to move Ugarte could force United to shelve the idea of signing a fresh left winger and instead lean back towards a familiar face.

Rashford, whose future has been a running saga, suddenly looks more likely to stay.

Ornstein set out the situation on X, noting that while midfield recruitment remains “unaffected” by Ugarte’s setback, the pursuit of a left-sided attacker is less certain. That shift “raises the likelihood” of Rashford remaining at Old Trafford.

Barcelona had the chance to keep him permanently via a €30m (£26m) option in their loan agreement and chose not to take it up. Other clubs can trigger a £40m clause in his contract – with Liverpool and Manchester City explicitly excluded – but interest at that level has not yet crystallised into a move.

A delicate recalibration

On The Athletic, Ornstein added more context. United are still weighing whether to bring in a new left-sided attacker at all, and Rashford sits at the heart of that decision.

The England forward is expected to rejoin the first-team group for pre-season next month and, as it stands, will be available for Michael Carrick to use. There is, Ornstein reports, a growing openness across the board to a proper reintegration rather than another temporary fix.

United want to avoid sending Rashford out on a third loan. Barcelona do not intend to sign him permanently. The 28-year-old, contracted until 2028, has no appetite for a move elsewhere in the Premier League. At the same time, he is not currently attracting the kind of elite suitors that would tempt him away from Old Trafford.

So the picture sharpens.

Ugarte stays, not through design but necessity. The midfield rebuild presses ahead regardless, with Mateus Fernandes and others in the frame. And on the left flank, a club that once seemed ready to move on from Rashford may now have to ask a different question:

Can he still be part of the solution in a team United are trying to reinvent?
