Manchester United Target Liverpool Striker Vincent Joseph
Manchester United eye Liverpool prospect Vincent Joseph in rare cross‑rival move
The direct transfer pipeline between Manchester United and Liverpool has been dry for more than 60 years. The rivalry usually burns too hot for that.
But around the edges, in the academies and youth ranks, the battle never really stops.
In 2021, United persuaded highly rated winger Ethan Ennis to turn down a contract from Liverpool and head down the M62 to Carrington. It was a small victory in a cold war of scouting networks and scholarship offers. Ennis is still on United’s books and has already sampled senior football with loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town.
Now United are trying to repeat the trick.
United move for Liverpool striker Vincent Joseph
According to The Secret Scout, a well-regarded voice on youth football and transfers, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” Anfield after being omitted from the club’s latest list of scholars. That omission has not gone unnoticed.
The same report states that United “hold strong interest” in Joseph, whose blend of physical presence and link-up play has caught the eye of scouts across Europe. At 16, he already looks comfortable bullying defenders and knitting attacks together, the sort of profile top clubs are scrambling for in a market short on classic number nines.
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have also sent scouts to watch him on multiple occasions, underlining how far his reputation has travelled at a young age.
Joseph has already stepped up to the U18 Premier League, where he made just two appearances last season but still managed to score three goals. It’s a small sample, but an emphatic one, and enough to convince observers that his ceiling is high.
“Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand,” The Secret Scout added, summing up the mood around the player.
If United were to prise him away, it would be another pointed reminder that the rivalry with Liverpool now runs as fiercely through the academy corridors as it does under the floodlights.
Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong also on United’s radar
Joseph is not the only teenager drawing admiring glances from Old Trafford. United are also understood to be among the clubs tracking Chelsea’s defensive prospect Josh Acheampong, with Bayern Munich again mentioned in the same breath.
The 20-year-old is viewed as one of the standout young defenders in Chelsea’s system, a towering presence at the back with the profile to grow into a modern centre-half. Recent reporting, relayed by The Peoples Person, claims he has emerged as a name of interest for United’s recruitment team.
Chelsea, though, are in no mood to entertain offers. The London club are believed to have turned down approaches from several unnamed sides, treating Acheampong as effectively untouchable at this stage of his development.
That resistance tells its own story. The market for young, high-upside defenders is every bit as fierce as the scramble for goalscorers like Joseph.
INEOS blueprint: marquee names and future pillars
Much of the noise around INEOS and the new power structure at Old Trafford has centred on marquee signings and Champions League nights. Big names, big fees, big statements.
But the pursuit of players like Vincent Joseph and Josh Acheampong hints at a broader plan. United are not only chasing ready-made stars; they are trying to rebuild the club’s talent base, stacking the academy and under-21s with prospects who can either break into the first team or become serious assets in their own right.
Poaching from direct rivals, whether Liverpool’s academy or Chelsea’s youth ranks, adds another layer. It weakens opponents at the roots while strengthening United’s own long-term core.
The senior squad will always grab the headlines. Yet moves like these, quiet and contested, often decide who shapes the next decade.
