Manchester United Target Khephren Thuram for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick is gathering pace – and the next target has a familiar surname and a profile that fits the new Old Trafford blueprint.
With Ederson already through the door from Atalanta in a deal worth more than £40million, United have moved quickly to plug the gap left by Casemiro’s departure. One signing won’t be enough. Carrick and the club hierarchy know it. If last season’s third-place finish in the Premier League was a step forward, the expectation now is to start breathing down the necks of the title contenders and hold their own in the Champions League.
That kind of leap needs legs, power and depth in midfield. Enter Khephren Thuram.
Juventus under pressure, United watching closely
Thuram, currently at Juventus, has emerged as a live option for United as the Italian club wrestles with its own financial realities. After missing out on Champions League qualification, Juve are under pressure to raise around £10–11million by the end of the month to stay within financial rules.
They signed Thuram for roughly €20million and have now set an asking price in the region of £35–40million, slightly lower than earlier figures. It’s not a bargain, but in today’s market it’s a number that doesn’t scare serious buyers.
According to Corriere dello Sport, relayed via Man Utd news, United are actively weighing up whether to meet that valuation. Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli are understood to be ready to go there already, but money is not the only factor in this race.
Thuram’s preference is clear: he wants to stay in Europe. More than that, a move to the Premier League appeals most. He has already rejected Galatasaray this summer, a decision that underlines both his ambition and his sense of where the next step in his career should be.
For United, that stance matters. They are not battling a player desperate for a Saudi payday; they are courting a 25-year-old who sees England as the stage on which to grow.
What Thuram would bring to Old Trafford
On the pitch, Thuram offers exactly the kind of profile Carrick appears to be assembling: athletic, aggressive, and capable of covering huge swathes of grass.
He is a true box-to-box midfielder, comfortable driving play forward but equally willing to do the dirty work. He doesn’t shirk duels, he doesn’t hide from contact, and he gives his team a physical presence through the spine that United have lacked at times since Casemiro’s form tailed off and his exit was confirmed.
His qualities have not gone unnoticed in Italy. Maurizio Sarri’s long-time assistant Giovanni Martusciello was effusive in his assessment last year, saying: “Who do I like? Thuram, I think he’s extraordinary. Overall, they seem like a team that can have its say until the end. Then, to fight for the big goals, at least the ones they’ve always had in Turin, we need more time.”
That word – “extraordinary” – stands out. It hints at upside, not just reliability. At 25, Thuram is entering his prime, but he is not yet a finished product. Under a coach like Carrick, who built his own career on reading the game and controlling tempo, there is room for Thuram’s raw power to be refined into something more complete.
There is also a practical advantage. With international commitments not currently an obstacle – he is free to negotiate as he is not involved with France’s World Cup squad – any deal would be easier to progress quickly if United decide to move.
For a club intent on turning a solid season into something more serious, the question is no longer whether they need another midfielder. It is whether Khephren Thuram is the one they are prepared to back as the heartbeat of the next United side.
