Manchester United Target Ederson as First Signing of Summer
Manchester United are edging towards their first major move of the summer – and it’s a statement of intent in the heart of midfield.
Ederson deal on the brink
INEOS have wasted no time plotting United’s next step after securing a return to the Champions League for the first time in three years. The window does not officially open until June 15, but the groundwork is already in place for Atalanta’s Ederson to become the first piece of a rebuilt engine room.
Fabrizio Romano reports that United have a full agreement with the Brazilian on personal terms. The 26-year-old has said yes to a five-year contract and is now effectively waiting for the clubs to catch up.
“So the agreement, Manchester United with Ederson is done. The player said yes to Man United. The contract is ready, it's a five-year deal,” Romano said on his YouTube channel, underlining how far talks have progressed.
The final hurdle lies with Atalanta. A fee of around €45 million is on the table, with discussions ongoing over payment structure and instalments. The Times had suggested a £38m agreement was already in place, but Romano insists the clubs are not quite over the line, even if they are very close.
Ederson’s stance is clear. Despite interest from elsewhere, he is holding out for Old Trafford.
“[Ederson is saying] ‘I wait for United now. United are close to completing the agreement with Atalanta for 45 million euros. Payment terms are being discussed, installments, and all the rest, but Ederson is very, very, very close to becoming a new Manchester United player,’” Romano added.
One final green light is needed from United’s hierarchy. The club have been working on the deal for weeks, and Ederson sits among a cluster of names being seriously considered to reshape the midfield.
Midfield rebuild gathers pace
Champions League football brings glamour, but also strain. United know it. The last time they graced Europe’s elite competition, in its previous format, they stumbled out in the group stage. With a third-place Premier League finish now banked behind Manchester City and Arsenal, the demand is to go again – harder, deeper, better equipped.
That is why central midfield has become a priority zone. Ederson is viewed as a key addition, but not the final answer.
He is not expected to be the like-for-like, top-tier replacement for Casemiro that United are seeking. That role may yet fall to another target: Sandro Tonali.
Reports in Italy in recent days have claimed that Michael Carrick personally pushed for Newcastle United’s Italy international before the club moved this far down the line with Ederson. Tonali, 26, has emerged as a major target, with suggestions that United are also closing in on an agreement for him.
Above all of them sits a dream name. Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid is understood to be the ideal signing in the eyes of the club, according to Romano. Whether Madrid are prepared to let him go is another matter, particularly after his high-profile clash with teammate Federico Valverde – a player also mentioned in dispatches as being on United’s radar.
A crowded shortlist
The list does not end there. GIVEMESPORT sources indicate Carrick’s number one target is Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. The problem? The England midfielder is currently more likely to head to Manchester City, a potential twist that would sting United on both sporting and symbolic levels.
Another name in the frame is Mateus Fernandes of West Ham United. Following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, the midfielder looks set to leave the London Stadium, and United are watching closely as they weigh up options across multiple roles in the middle of the pitch.
The pattern is unmistakable. United are not tinkering; they are preparing for a full-scale refresh in the area that will define whether their Champions League return becomes a short cameo or the start of something more durable.
Ederson appears to be the first domino. Once that falls, how bold will INEOS be with the rest of the line?
