Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Mateus Fernandes Targeted
Champions League football is back on the agenda at Old Trafford next season, and with it comes an unavoidable truth: this Manchester United midfield is about to be ripped up and rebuilt.
Casemiro is on his way out when his contract runs down. Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow him through the exit door. Two senior midfielders gone, possibly three replacements needed, and a schedule that will only get heavier with Europe back on the calendar. United cannot afford to get this window wrong.
They have started early.
Two Tracks: Ederson and a New Priority
Ederson of Atalanta has been one of the headline names on United’s list. The club have already held talks with his representatives and are believed to be edging towards an agreement on personal terms. The Brazilian, who had looked set for Atletico Madrid before the Spanish side turned their attention to Joao Gomes, is now increasingly likely to land in the Premier League. That shift has handed United a clear opening.
But while the noise grows around Ederson, something more significant is happening in parallel.
United are also advancing in talks for Mateus Fernandes, the Portuguese midfielder whose name has quickly climbed their internal shortlist. Discussions with his camp have been ongoing for the past four to six weeks, and the deal is understood to be moving in the right direction.
There is a catch, and it’s a brutal one for his current club. Any move is expected to hinge on them being relegated from the Premier League. Their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal has dragged them closer to the trapdoor, leaving them two points from safety with just two games left. Survival or the drop will not only define their season, it could decide Fernandes’ future.
Bruno’s Recommendation, Board’s Opportunity
Inside Old Trafford, Fernandes comes with a powerful endorsement. Club captain Bruno Fernandes has recommended his compatriot, and that carries weight. Those around the squad have seen enough of the younger man’s development to believe he fits the profile of what United need: energy, technical quality, and room to grow.
He also fits another key requirement. Price.
If his club do go down, Fernandes is expected to be relatively cheap compared to other midfield options on the market. For a United side trying to refresh the squad without throwing money blindly at every problem, that matters. His recent performances have already caught the eye, and a deal at the right fee would be the sort of move that excites supporters who are tired of overpaying for fading names.
Ederson, by contrast, arrives with a different selling point: experience at the highest level. He has shone in Serie A, handled European nights, and was close to a move to one of Spain’s most demanding clubs. He is a ready-made competitor, someone who can step into a top side without blinking.
Yet that doesn’t automatically make him the smarter play.
Why Mateus Fernandes Makes More Sense
Inside the recruitment debate, the comparison is stark. Both players are likely to cost a similar amount if West Ham are relegated and Fernandes becomes available on favourable terms. One offers a proven track record; the other offers a higher ceiling.
United, under pressure to modernise their squad building, know they can no longer just buy the finished article and hope. They need players who will grow with the project, not age out of it. Fernandes has already shown he can cope with the Premier League in a short spell, and he has done it with enough authority to suggest there is much more to come.
Ederson would be a solid addition. Fernandes could become something more.
Neither is expected to walk straight into the starting XI on day one. United are exploring other midfield targets, and the competition for places is likely to be fierce. This is not about finding one saviour; it is about assembling a unit that can cope with the demands of domestic and European football.
But when the choice narrows to these two, the logic is clear. Similar price. One with experience. One with upside. In that equation, Mateus Fernandes is the one United should be building around.
The midfield that walks out at Old Trafford next season will look very different. The question now is whether United choose the safer option in Ederson, or trust the higher ceiling of Fernandes and finally lean into a long-term plan.
