Manchester United Eye Mateus Fernandes Amid Competition

Manchester United are moving quickly to test West Ham United’s resolve over Mateus Fernandes, with the Portugal international now elevated to the top of their summer midfield shortlist.

INEOS have already walked away from one major target. Elliot Anderson, long admired at Old Trafford, has been effectively priced out of a move, with Nottingham Forest’s £130million valuation shutting down any prospect of a deal. United are refusing to be dragged into a bidding war at those numbers, and their gaze has shifted.

From Anderson to Fernandes

The pivot has been sharp. With West Ham relegated to the Championship, Fernandes has become a live opportunity rather than a distant ambition. His situation invites bids; his price, far from cheap, is at least rooted in the reality of a player now outside the Premier League.

Tyrone Marshall, the Chief Manchester United correspondent for the Manchester Evening News, captured the mood early on June 11. Posting on X at 7:59am, he wrote that United are “unwilling to pay £120million for Elliot Anderson and won’t be drawn into a bidding war,” adding that they are now focusing on other targets “with Mateus Fernandes at the top of the list.”

That line tallies with what has followed. The pressure around Fernandes’ future has started to build.

Romano: ‘Official contact’ and a bid in the works

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United have stepped up their interest, moving from background admiration into direct talks with the player’s camp. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Italian journalist said: “Manchester United are in official contact with the agent of the player.

“Manchester United already started the conversation with the agent to start preparing a bid to West Ham, so Man Utd are for sure in conversations with Mateus Fernandes.

“So, we have to take this into consideration and then see how other clubs will react because there are more clubs, not only Man Utd, not only Real Madrid, so it’s going to be an interesting race surely.”

West Ham’s stance is clear. Romano previously reported that the London club fixed Fernandes’ price at £85m during a meeting with his camp, a figure that reflects both his importance and their need to maximise value after relegation. They paid £38m plus £4m in add-ons to sign him; they now want more than double that outlay.

A crowded field of giants

United are not alone at the table. TalkSPORT journalist Ben Jacobs has underlined just how congested this chase could become.

Posting on X at 3:43pm on June 11, Jacobs wrote: “Movement expected on Mateus Fernandes’ future this month. Manchester United already in talks on the player side. PSG and Arsenal also hold appreciation. Real Madrid the latest suitor to make contact. West Ham want double the £38m+£4m they paid, but despite this valuation a sale is expected.”

That last line matters. West Ham may want top dollar, but there is an acceptance that Fernandes is unlikely to be lining up in the Championship next season. The market knows it. So do the player’s representatives. So do United.

Romano has already flagged “more clubs… attentive and keen”, and the names involved underline the scale of the battle. Arsenal, chasing midfield control. PSG, forever hunting the next long-term pillar. Real Madrid, the “latest suitor to make contact”, capable of turning any transfer race on its head with a single phone call.

United’s pitch: project, power and a familiar face

Amid all that noise, United are leaning on something different: a defined role, a rebuilt sporting structure under INEOS, and the pull of Old Trafford for a 21-year-old Portugal international who already sees a clear path in Manchester.

TEAMtalk reported on May 14 that Fernandes is “extremely keen” on a move to United. That interest is not abstract. United already have a deal in place with Atalanta for Ederson Silva, signalling a clear intent to remodel the midfield around energy, aggression and technical quality.

For Fernandes, there is another hook: Bruno Fernandes. The chance to play alongside his Portugal teammate in the heart of United’s side is understood to appeal, and the idea of a Portuguese axis at Old Trafford adds an extra layer to United’s pitch.

West Ham’s £85m price tag will test how serious that interest really is. But with official contact made, a bid being prepared and heavyweight rivals circling, the question now is simple: do United move decisively, or risk watching another elite midfield talent slip into the colours of a rival?
