Manchester United Divided Over €60m Move for Manu Kone

Manchester United’s summer rebuild has hit its first major internal fault line, with the club’s hierarchy divided over a move for AS Roma midfielder Manu Kone.

The Frenchman, fresh from a World Cup run that ended in a semi-final defeat to Spain earlier this month, has climbed towards the top of United’s midfield shortlist. Personal terms are understood to be agreed, but there is a hard stop: Roma’s price.

The Serie A side are holding out for a €60 million (£51m) package for the 25-year-old. That figure, and the wider question of whether Kone is the right profile at that cost, has triggered debate inside Old Trafford’s recruitment department. According to The Telegraph, the proposal does not have “universal backing” among the decision-makers shaping Michael Carrick’s squad.

Carrick has already welcomed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans through the door this summer. Two smart, different additions: one a high-ceiling prospect, the other a proven Premier League operator. Yet United still want a third midfielder before the new season kicks off, a final piece to balance a unit that has too often looked fragile when stretched.

The shortlist is not short on variety. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Tyler Adams are both under active consideration, offering contrasting skill sets: Scott as a progressive, creative presence, Adams as a relentless ball-winner with Premier League know-how. Higher up the food chain, Aurelien Tchouameni remains an ambitious option if – and only if – Real Madrid signal a willingness to sell the France international.

Kone sits somewhere between those profiles. Dynamic, aggressive, comfortable carrying the ball through the thirds, he offers energy and edge. But the fee, the fit, and the timing have all prompted hesitation behind the scenes.

And he is not the only midfielder prompting second thoughts.

United also retain an interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, a player they tried to prise away last summer before running into a £100m valuation. That price always looked steep. What followed under Fabian Hurzeler did little to settle the argument: flashes of promise, but an inconsistent season that has cooled some of the enthusiasm at Old Trafford. There are now said to be reservations internally about going back in for the 22-year-old.

So the debate continues. Kone at €60m. Baleba at a still-premium price after a patchy campaign. Scott and Adams as more attainable domestic options. Tchouameni as the dream scenario, contingent on Real Madrid’s stance.

While the recruitment team argues the finer points of value and upside, Carrick’s players are doing their talking on the pitch. On Friday, United cruised to a 5-0 win over Rosenborg in Norway, another confident step in pre-season and a reminder that the framework of a competitive side is already in place.

“I think we’re in a good place,” Carrick said afterwards. “I think there’s four weeks to go to the start and we’re gradually getting some boys back from the World Cup as we progress.

“But I think a little bit of patience and time and trying to keep ahead and as I said, keeping everyone fit but moving forward is a really good direction to go in. And as it stands right now, I think we’re in a pretty good place. So, the boys will get better as we go.”

That calm, measured tone contrasts sharply with the tension around United’s next big midfield call. One more signing could define how Carrick’s side handle the grind of a Premier League season: the injuries, the fixture pile-ups, the games when control in the middle of the pitch decides everything.

The question now is simple, and expensive: do United push hard for Kone, pivot to an alternative, or hold their nerve and wait for a different opportunity in a market that rarely rewards hesitation?
