Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Carrick Under Pressure to Respond

Manchester United walk into their second Premier League game of the season already under pressure. A 2-0 defeat on the opening day to fellow promoted side Hull City did more than bruise the scoreline – it dented the aura Michael Carrick has been trying to build.

Hull, up through the playoffs, made United look like the newcomers. That will sting. And it leaves Ipswich Town, another newly-promoted side, arriving at Old Trafford sensing opportunity rather than occasion.

Carrick cannot allow a repeat. The performance has to change, even if the team sheet barely does.

Baleba Arrives, But May Have to Wait

Since that loss, United have moved in the market. Carlos Baleba has come in from Brighton and Hove Albion, finally giving the squad a genuine specialist in the defensive midfield role.

He is the profile United have lacked. But timing is cruel.

Baleba suffered an ankle ligament injury during Brighton’s pre-season and is still working his way back. The expectation is that he returns to full fitness before the end of September, with individual training likely to come first before he’s thrown into full-contact sessions.

As things stand, his realistic target is the home clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, 10 October. Ipswich may come too soon.

Amad Blow Complicates Carrick’s Options

Out wide, Carrick’s plans have already taken a hit.

Amad, who featured in United’s final pre-season outing against AC Milan, missed the Hull City defeat after picking up an injury in training. Roundtable understands the issue could keep him out for up to six weeks.

That timeline also points towards a potential return against Tottenham on 10 October, leaving United short of one of their more inventive attacking options just as they look to sharpen their edge.

Mount Edges Back at the Right Time

Not all the news is grim.

Mason Mount’s situation has been a slow-burn concern. He was forced off before the 20-minute mark in the pre-season meeting with Paris Saint-Germain after a knock to the foot. He left the stadium without a limp, but never reappeared in the remaining friendlies against Leeds United and AC Milan, and then sat out the Hull game as well.

He was described as “touch and go” for that opener. Now the picture is brighter.

Sam Cohen has reported that Mount has trained with the Manchester United squad ahead of the Ipswich fixture. That puts him in contention for Sunday, 30 August, when Ipswich come to Old Trafford.

For a team that looked flat and short of ideas in their first league outing, Mount’s return could be crucial.

De Ligt’s Long Road Back

At the back, the wait continues.

Matthijs de Ligt has not played since suffering a back injury in November 2025. At the time, Rúben Amorim suggested the Dutch defender could be back after just a week on the sidelines. The reality has been very different.

De Ligt has now been seen back in training with the first-team group. Even so, this appears to be the early stage of his rehabilitation rather than a sign he is ready to start games. Back injuries demand patience, and United know they cannot rush him.

His potential return is pencilled in for late October, a distant but important marker in United’s season.

Same Squad, Very Different Expectations

Strip away the noise and the picture is clear: Carrick is likely to go into the Ipswich match with a squad that looks very similar to the one that faltered against Hull City.

The difference has to come from within.

Ipswich will arrive with the energy and freedom of a promoted side chasing a statement result. United, already wounded once, cannot afford to let another newcomer dictate the narrative.

The personnel may barely change. The performance, Carrick knows, absolutely must.
