Manchester United Confirm Exits of Sancho, Malacia, and Casemiro

Manchester United’s latest retained list has drawn a firm line under three short, sharp chapters at Old Trafford, with Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro all confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of their contracts.

No drama. Just a clean break for three very different careers that never quite settled into the shape United once imagined.

Sancho: a £73m gamble that never caught fire

When United pushed through a £73million deal to prise Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, they thought they were buying a cornerstone of the club’s future. An England international entering his prime, a winger built for the Stretford End.

It never truly happened.

Sancho leaves having made just 83 appearances for United, his Old Trafford story increasingly defined by the loans that followed. He spent last season at Aston Villa, where his form hinted again at the talent that made him one of Europe’s most coveted young players. Before that, he returned to Dortmund on loan, and also had a spell at Chelsea.

Now he walks away as a free agent, linked with familiar surroundings at Dortmund and with a permanent return to Villa also in the conversation. At 24, he still has time to reframe his narrative. It just won’t be in Manchester.

Malacia: promise stalled by injury

Tyrell Malacia’s departure carries a different tone. The Dutch full-back arrived from Feyenoord in 2022 as energetic competition at left-back, a modern defender with the aggression and speed United’s back line badly needed.

He showed flashes of exactly that.

Malacia, now 26, made 50 appearances for the club, but injuries repeatedly cut through his momentum and stalled any chance of establishing himself as a regular. Every time he seemed ready to push on, his body dragged him back.

United’s decision to let his contract run down ends a stop-start spell that promised more than it ultimately delivered.

Casemiro: a heavyweight presence moves on

If Sancho’s time at United felt unfinished and Malacia’s was interrupted, Casemiro’s four-year stay carried the weight and clarity of a seasoned professional doing what he does best.

Signed from Real Madrid, the Brazilian midfielder brought pedigree, authority and goals from deep. He played 160 games and scored 26 times, anchoring United’s midfield and offering a level of experience the squad badly needed.

Now at the World Cup with Brazil, Casemiro leaves with his legacy intact: a short but significant stint, a senior figure who gave United structure in turbulent seasons.

United made the exits official on Wednesday when they published their retained list. The club’s statement was simple and respectful: everyone at Manchester United, it said, wanted to thank Casemiro, Tyrell and Jadon for their contributions and wished them the very best for the future.

Three contracts end. Three careers move on. And United, once again, step into another summer of rebuilding.
