Manchester United Eye David Raum as Left-Back Option Amid Lewis Hall Setback
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp turn towards Germany, with RB Leipzig’s David Raum emerging as a serious option after Newcastle United shut the door on any move for Lewis Hall.
United want competition – and possibly a successor – for Luke Shaw, who has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford. Hall had been internally cleared as a prime target, viewed as an ideal long-term option, but Newcastle’s stance has hardened after a summer of big-name departures from St James’ Park. The message from the North East is blunt: Hall is not for sale.
So United have had to pivot. And fast.
Raum gives green light
Raum is not a consolation prize. In the Bundesliga he has been talked about as one of the division’s standout left-backs, a constant outlet on the flank and a regular for RB Leipzig in recent seasons. Like Shaw, he offers thrust from deep. Unlike Shaw, his contractual situation puts him firmly in play.
The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his deal in Leipzig. On paper, there is a release clause in the region of £34 million. Behind the scenes, intermediaries now believe a fee below £30m could be enough to strike a deal in this window, given the timing and the risk of losing him for less down the line.
Crucially for United, Raum has already been down this road with them. He previously held talks over a move to Old Trafford and, according to the latest briefings, he has again signalled his approval. The green light is there. He is ready to come in, fight Shaw for the starting spot and try to make the left-back position his own.
For a club returning to the Champions League and facing a packed calendar, that matters. United are not just looking for cover; they want a left-back who can handle the strain of multiple competitions and raise the level of the squad. Raum’s mix of experience and availability makes him one of the most attractive names on a shrinking shortlist.
Jason Wilcox has effectively accepted that Hall will not be prised from Newcastle this summer, and that admission has sharpened the focus. The recruitment team are now expected to ramp up their efforts for an alternative in the final weeks of the window, with Raum firmly in the frame.
Vivell connection and Bundesliga pedigree
If United do push ahead, they will not be stepping into the unknown. Their director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, knows Raum’s game inside out from their shared time at RB Leipzig and has long been an admirer.
Back in 2024, Vivell could barely hide his enthusiasm when asked about the Germany international, highlighting his rise as one of the Bundesliga’s most reliable full-backs. Raum had “developed brilliantly” over a two-year spell, he said, establishing himself as a regular both for his club and for Germany in his first top-flight season. Quick. Dynamic. A clean striker of the ball. A constant threat from set pieces and crosses. The profile reads like a checklist for what United have been missing on that side of the pitch when Shaw is absent.
The numbers behind him are significant too. Since 2021, Raum has collected 39 caps for Germany, a tally that underlines his standing at the highest level. This is not a prospect to be moulded, but a seasoned international who would arrive at Old Trafford at his peak years, battle-tested in the Bundesliga and on the international stage.
For United, the equation is clear. A left-back is no longer a luxury signing; it is a structural necessity. With Hall locked away on Tyneside and the clock ticking on Shaw’s contract, the club now face a decision: do they turn long-standing admiration for David Raum into a decisive move, or risk entering another season one injury away from a familiar problem on the flank?
