Manchester City Eye Enzo Fernandez Amid Rodri Exit Rumors

Manchester City are braced for a summer that could rip out the heart of their midfield – and replace it with Chelsea’s most expensive asset.

Rodri, the metronome of City’s recent dominance, is edging towards what has been described as an emotional exit, and the club are already mapping out life without their No.16. At the top of that list sits Enzo Fernandez.

That possibility has been laid out by former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who believes Enzo Maresca will not settle for a single midfield reinforcement if Rodri walks away.

City have already thrown serious money at reshaping the squad. Elliot Anderson has arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116million, a fee that underlines just how aggressively the Premier League champions are prepared to spend in this window. Lille’s 18-year-old prodigy Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to follow for around £86m, a move Borson still sees happening regardless of Rodri’s fate.

But Maresca’s rebuild, in his view, does not stop there.

Borson, speaking to Football Insider, suggested that City’s hierarchy are planning to stay active deep into the window, on both the buying and selling fronts. Chelsea, he argued, are likely to do the same. That is where Fernandez’s future becomes a live issue rather than idle gossip.

Chelsea, by all accounts, would want around £120m to even consider parting with the Argentina international. Real Madrid are circling, drawn by his age, pedigree and ceiling. Yet the Manchester City link refuses to fade, strengthened by Fernandez’s connection to Maresca and the growing sense that Rodri’s time at the Etihad is drawing to a close.

Borson framed it bluntly: there is still “a question mark” over whether Fernandez goes, and if he does, it would be “an enormous transaction.” The natural follow-up hangs in the air – is he the man City turn to when Rodri leaves?

Maresca, stepping into Pep Guardiola’s vast shadow, is clearly determined to put his own stamp on the champions. A marquee midfield signing to anchor his system would do exactly that. Fernandez, Chelsea’s No.8, fits the profile in terms of status and technical quality, and his relationship with the new City boss only adds fuel to the speculation.

Yet timing will dictate everything.

Inside the club, Borson believes City want clarity on Rodri’s future before the season’s first serious marker: the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, 16 August. The stance is simple – bring a suitable offer by then, or Rodri stays for another year. No late-window sagas. No last-minute scrambling.

Only once that domino falls, he suggests, will City move decisively for Fernandez.

Chelsea, for their part, are under no illusion about the scale of the decision. Letting Fernandez go would reshape their own midfield and their balance sheet in one hit. It would also remove a player who, on last season’s numbers, remains a significant attacking force: 16 goals and 10 assists in 61 games in all competitions for the Blues.

Those figures explain why, despite the noise around his future and questions over his fit at Stamford Bridge, Fernandez is being talked about as a potentially “incredible addition” to City’s squad rather than a gamble.

So the stage is set. Rodri’s situation holds the key, City’s deadline is looming, and Chelsea’s resolve is about to be tested. If the champions do lose their midfield general, will they really let a player of Fernandez’s profile slip to Madrid or elsewhere – or will the Etihad become the next stop on his turbulent post-World Cup journey?
