Luka Vuskovic Shines in Brighton Debut

Luka Vuskovic did not need long to understand what Brighton have bought.

A clean sheet, a composed first 45 minutes against Roma and a first taste of the Amex under lights: the club’s record signing walked off at half-time looking like he already belonged.

“It was very nice,” the 17-year-old centre-back said of his home debut, a typically understated verdict after a quietly authoritative display before making way for captain Lewis Dunk for the second half.

For Vuskovic, the scoreboard mattered as much as the occasion.

“A clean sheet is the most important thing for me as a defender, but I think we played very good as a team,” he told BBC Radio Sussex. The words were simple, the message clear. He is here to defend first, and to grow with the group around him.

Those around him are making that process easier.

“The last two or three weeks that I've been here have been really nice and I am enjoying my time here. All the guys accepted me really well, so did the coaching staff and the other people at the club,” he said. There was no sense of a teenager feeling his way into a new dressing room; more a young player dropped into a structure that fits.

Brighton have built a reputation on exactly that: identifying talent early, surrounding it with responsibility and trust, and watching it flourish. Vuskovic already sounds aligned with that project.

“I think we are a really good group of young people and we can only grow as players and humans. I think this will be a really good season for us.”

Those are big words from a new arrival, but they echo the conviction of head coach Fabian Hurzeler, who has wasted no time in setting the bar high for his new defender.

“He's very mature for his age so he adapts quickly and understands quickly,” Hurzeler said. “If a player can understand quickly then it shows they have real quality.”

That understanding showed in flashes against Roma: his positioning when Brighton built from the back, the willingness to step in front of his man, the calmness under pressure. This was not a night for last-ditch heroics; it was a night to show he can be trusted with the basics. He passed that test.

Hurzeler is not dressing it up as a completed job. Far from it.

“He will be an important player for us. This is just the first step as there are things that he needs to improve, but he has the right mindset and attitude,” the coach said, framing the evening as a beginning rather than a conclusion.

There is another layer to Vuskovic’s profile that Brighton like: he is not just a stopper. He carries a threat.

“He is a big threat as he scored a lot of goals at his previous club, so that will help us with set pieces which have been very important for us in the Premier League,” Hurzeler added.

For a side that leans heavily on dead-ball situations, a centre-back who relishes attacking the ball is a valuable weapon. The Amex crowd did not see that side of him ripple the net against Roma, but the signs were there in his movement and timing at corners, the sense that this is a defender who expects to make a difference in both boxes.

On a pre-season night that might easily have drifted into routine, Brighton’s record signing offered something more tangible: a first glimpse of why the club pushed so hard to bring him in, and a reminder that their next defensive leader might already be walking out behind Dunk.

The clean sheet will fade from memory. The impression Vuskovic made will not.
