Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract with Tottenham

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U‑turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder, frustrated by limited minutes following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival late last season, had pushed for a summer move. Tottenham stood firm. Nottingham Forest tested that resolve with a £38m bid that was rejected, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also circled without success.

For a player so heavily courted, his involvement this season has been minimal: just 45 minutes of Premier League football in a Spurs shirt. Yet inside the club, the tone has changed. From exit talk to long-term commitment.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said after putting pen to paper. He spoke like a player who has chosen the project over the promise of an easier route to the pitch.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

Those words land differently when set against the backdrop of a turbulent few months. De Zerbi, who arrived during a chaotic run-in as Spurs narrowly avoided relegation, openly admitted in the summer that he had mishandled Bergvall in that fraught period.

Back in July, the Italian was adamant he would not beg anyone to stay. He called Bergvall “a top, top, top player” but drew a clear line: no player would be convinced against his will.

Now, the narrative has flipped. With the contract signed, De Zerbi has his midfielder back onside and a fresh chance to build around him.

Speaking after the renewal, the Spurs head coach said: “I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

The platform is there. The question now is simple: can Bergvall turn this renewed faith into the influence Spurs expected when they refused to cash in?
