Liverpool's Defensive Concerns: Iraola's Search for a Centre-Back
Liverpool’s defensive alarm bells are ringing – and Andoni Iraola wants answers before a ball is kicked in anger.
The new head coach has wasted no time in flagging centre-back as a priority position, with a disjointed pre-season already exposing how thin Liverpool are for senior options at the heart of their defence.
Pre-season scare sharpens focus
The warning sign came early. In a friendly win over Sunderland, Joe Gomez limped off inside the opening 10 minutes, leaving Iraola to turn to 18-year-olds Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe to see out the game.
Promising talents, yes. But not the sort of safety net a manager wants as he builds towards a Premier League campaign.
Virgil van Dijk remains on an extended break after the World Cup, while summer signings Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are still working back from injury. For a club that has long prided itself on stability at the back, the picture is suddenly far less reassuring.
That reality has accelerated work behind the scenes. Liverpool are now actively exploring the market for an experienced centre-back, with several high-profile names under serious discussion.
Stones tops an ambitious shortlist
At the top of that list sits John Stones. The England international, now a free agent after leaving Manchester City, is viewed inside Anfield as a particularly attractive solution.
At 32, Stones arrives with a wealth of experience and a reputation freshly burnished by an outstanding World Cup campaign under Thomas Tuchel. His performances on the biggest stage have drawn interest from across Europe, the Premier League, MLS and the Saudi Pro League.
Liverpool, though, are firmly in the conversation. Stones is open to discussing a move to Anfield, even as he also talks with Arsenal and Chelsea while weighing up the next chapter of his career. For Iraola, a defender who can step in immediately, handle pressure and play out from the back would tick a lot of boxes.
Konsa’s versatility catches the eye
Ezri Konsa has emerged as another genuine option.
The Aston Villa defender has long been admired for his ability to operate both at centre-back and at right-back. That versatility is a key part of his appeal to Liverpool, with Iraola keen on adding players who can shift roles without disrupting the team’s structure.
Such flexibility would give the Spaniard more room to manoeuvre tactically and offer extra cover in two positions where Liverpool cannot afford to be caught short.
Arsenal retain an interest in Konsa, but Liverpool have now entered the race as they weigh up multiple defensive targets and consider how best to reshape the unit for the season ahead.
Zabarnyi back on Iraola’s radar
Another name back in the frame is Illia Zabarnyi.
Liverpool have been alerted to the potential availability of the Paris Saint-Germain defender, who has grown frustrated by a lack of regular minutes in France. A deal would not be straightforward, yet the connection with Iraola is strong.
The pair worked together at Bournemouth, where the Ukraine international made a significant impression. Iraola remains a huge admirer of Zabarnyi and would welcome the chance to reunite if the situation at PSG opens the door.
That familiarity could prove crucial if Liverpool decide to move quickly.
Dream targets out of reach – for now
Behind those more realistic options sit two long-standing dream signings: Levi Colwill at Chelsea and Micky van de Ven at Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool’s admiration for both defenders has not faded. Colwill’s left-footed balance and composure, Van de Ven’s pace and aggression – they are exactly the kind of profiles that would reshape the back line for years.
Right now, though, sources indicate neither London club has any intention of letting them go. As it stands, those moves look highly unlikely.
Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Antonio Silva and Ousmane Diomande. Silva is expected to complete a move to Bournemouth, while Nottingham Forest are advancing in talks for Diomande. Even so, Liverpool continue to receive updates on both, a reflection of long-term scouting work and the club’s determination not to be caught flat-footed if circumstances change.
A decisive moment for Liverpool’s rebuild
For Iraola, this is the first major test of his influence on Liverpool’s recruitment. The need is clear, the targets are identified, and the clock is ticking towards the new season.
