Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez Reunion Talk Hits a Hard Stop

Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez reunion talk has hit a hard stop.

Despite a swirl of claims from Spain and Uruguay that a dramatic return from Al-Hilal was effectively sealed, club-focused reports in England paint a very different picture. Inside Anfield, the idea of Núñez pulling on a red shirt again this summer is being dismissed as fantasy.

From ‘done deal’ to dead end

The story caught fire earlier this month when Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo suggested Liverpool were “positioning themselves” to re-sign Núñez as a low-cost option. The narrative was enticing: the Uruguay international, said to have reached an agreement in principle to terminate his Al-Hilal contract by mutual consent, would be able to leave Saudi Arabia for free.

Uruguayan journalist Juan Pablo Romero then poured petrol on the rumour. Speaking on Carpe Deportiva, he declared that Núñez was going to play for Liverpool, insisting everything was “done” for the striker to return to Anfield next season, even if no announcement would arrive during the World Cup period.

For a fanbase already bracing for life after Mohamed Salah, it sounded like a ready-made twist. The prodigal forward back on Merseyside, this time as a bargain.

Then the brakes went on.

Liverpool looking elsewhere

Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke has moved to shut down the notion of a romantic reunion. His information is blunt: Liverpool are not currently in the race to sign Núñez and have no plans, as things stand, to bring him back.

“I don’t think Liverpool, right now, have any plans to sign Nunez and bring him back to Anfield, having let him leave a year ago to make that move to Saudi Arabia,” O’Rourke said on Football Insider’s podcast. He described the talk of a return as “a bit of a pie in the sky”.

The club’s energy is being directed elsewhere. With Salah expected to leave this summer, Yan Diomande has emerged as the top attacking target, while the forward line has already been reshaped with the arrivals of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike last year. The focus is on refining that structure, not rewinding it.

Newcastle, rather than Liverpool, are one of the sides credited with genuine interest in Núñez. Premier League attention remains, but a shock return to Merseyside “is not on the cards as it stands”.

Big budget, different priorities

If Liverpool wanted to make a statement, they have the financial muscle to do it. According to O’Rourke, sources have indicated the club are ready to spend over £250m this summer as they gear up for a title push under their ex-Bournemouth manager.

That level of backing underlines how significant this window will be. It also underlines something else: any major decision in attack will be deliberate, strategic, and aligned with the new regime’s vision. A free transfer for a familiar face might sound shrewd from the outside, but it clearly doesn’t fit the current blueprint inside Anfield.

Romano shuts the door

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has echoed that stance. He reported that “there’s nothing ongoing” between Liverpool and Núñez over a possible return from Al-Hilal, and that sources close to the striker are playing down the stories.

On his YouTube channel, Romano added that those in Núñez’s camp deny the claims of an imminent Liverpool move, insisting “it’s not true” and that there is no active negotiation with the club.

So the picture is clear. While rumours of a reunion made plenty of noise, the people closest to the deal – on both the club and player side – are pushing back firmly.

Liverpool will reshape their attack this summer. They will spend heavily. They will replace Salah. But unless something drastic changes, they will do it without rewinding the Darwin Núñez chapter.
