Liverpool's £145m Barcola Deal Stalls as Arsenal Eyes Opportunity

Liverpool’s search for a successor to Mohamed Salah has hit a wall – and it could open the door for a major Arsenal move.

The Anfield hierarchy have been locked in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Bradley Barcola, identified as a prime target after Salah’s surprise free transfer to Trabzonspor last week. The France winger ticks the boxes: young, explosive, hungry for more minutes. But one number keeps killing the conversation.

That is the figure PSG have placed on Barcola, according to The Athletic, and they are refusing to budge. Liverpool, for all their need and ambition, are not prepared to go that high. The gap between valuation and reality is now so wide that those close to the negotiations see stalemate rather than breakthrough.

Barcola is understood to be keen on the move, aware that his game time in Paris is far from guaranteed and attracted by the chance to become a central piece in Andoni Iraola’s rebuild. Yet his wishes are colliding with PSG’s hardline stance and Liverpool’s financial red lines.

With deadline day just three weeks away, time is starting to matter. Liverpool cannot afford to drift into the final days of the window still chained to a deal that refuses to move. The mood around the club is shifting: if PSG do not soften, Liverpool are prepared to walk away and divert their energy – and money – towards alternative options to strengthen what is widely seen as a threadbare squad.

One of those alternatives is closer to home than most. Ibrahim Mbaye, the 18-year-old PSG prospect, has emerged on their list. The teenager does not bring Barcola’s experience, but he offers potential and, crucially, a far more accessible price bracket.

Liverpool’s willingness to pivot has not gone unnoticed elsewhere.

Arsenal, still hunting the marquee forward they want to add to Mikel Arteta’s evolving squad, are watching the situation closely. They were left frustrated when Vinicius Junior chose to sign a new long-term contract at Real Madrid rather than entertain a move to north London. The need for a “blockbuster” attacking addition remains.

Barcola fits that profile. Even after the arrival of Christos Tzolis on the left flank, Arsenal’s recruitment team have not closed the door on another wide forward. If Liverpool step back from the table, Arsenal could see a clear run at a player they already admire.

Arteta has been open about his intentions. “Well, that's what we're trying to do,” he said when asked about further signings this summer. “If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very looking forward to that.”

Those words came in the same week Arsenal sanctioned a £75m deal for Bruno Guimaraes, underlining both their financial muscle and their determination to push the squad to the next level. The focus now, internally, has turned towards forwards.

So the dynamic is simple. PSG hold firm at £145m. Liverpool, wary of overpaying even in a window where they desperately need attacking firepower, edge towards the exit. Barcola waits, wanting more minutes, but tied to a club in no rush to sell.
