FC Köln’s final week of Bundesliga preparation was jolted on Tuesday when Linton Maina left training in tears, sparking real concern over one of their standout performers of pre-season.
The 27-year-old winger appeared to take a knock to his foot or ankle during a challenge at the Geißbockheim training ground. He tried to shake it off and continue, but the pain quickly won that battle. Maina eventually sank to the turf, visibly distressed, and required treatment on the pitch before hobbling away.
Coach René Wagner did not hide his concern. He immediately followed the limping Maina towards the dressing room, with club staff preparing a closer assessment in the coming hours. With Hoffenheim visiting on Saturday for Köln’s Bundesliga opener, the timing could hardly be worse.
From match-winner to major doubt
The injury scare came less than 24 hours after Maina had underlined his growing importance to this Köln side.
On Monday, he came off the bench in the DFB-Pokal and changed the game, delivering the assist for Isak Johannesson’s winner in a 2-1 victory over Würzburg. It was another decisive moment in a pre-season full of them, strengthening his claim for a starting role on the opening weekend.
Now that place is in serious doubt.
Reports around the club suggest Wagner is hopeful the damage is limited to a shin problem, which might still allow Maina to recover in time for the weekend. Until the medical team delivers a full diagnosis, though, that hope sits alongside a very real fear: that this could be more than a short interruption.
A thin attack under more strain
Any extended absence would hit Köln hard. Maina, a Harambee Stars prospect, has been one of the brightest attacking sparks in recent weeks, offering pace, direct running and end product on the flanks.
His rise has come at a crucial moment for the club. Köln are already trying to reconfigure their attack after the €20 million sale of Jakub Kaminski to Benfica, a departure that stripped significant quality from the right wing. The squad was light in that area before Tuesday. Losing Maina now would stretch Wagner’s options even further.
The coaching staff had earmarked him as a key figure for the new campaign, not just as an impact substitute but as a genuine contender to start against Hoffenheim. His form had earned that status. His body may yet deny it.
