Lille Eye Victory as Angers Seek Survival

The new Ligue 1 season eases into Sunday with a meeting of two clubs staring at very different horizons. Angers, back for a third straight year in the top flight, host Lille at Stade Raymond Kopa knowing the fight has too often been about staying afloat. Lille arrive expecting far more than that.

Last season underlined the gap. Les Scoïstes finished 13th on 36 points, once again marooned in the bottom half. Lille, 10 places higher, landed in the top three for the second time this decade and reminded the league they still belong in the title conversation.

Angers: new boss, same old question

Angers want this campaign to be something other than another nine-month scramble. The numbers tell a blunt story: 36 points in each of the last two seasons, the same anxious glance over the shoulder, the same late-season tension.

Stephane Gilli has been handed the job of breaking that pattern. His last top job ended abruptly with a sacking at Paris FC in February; this is his chance to show he belongs at Ligue 1 level.

He will lean heavily on the club’s summer business. Angers have moved smartly rather than extravagantly, pulling in experience on free transfers and loans. Anthony Lopes and Branco van den Boomen arrive without fees, while Usman Simbokoli is the headline signing from RWDM Brussels and Amine El Ouazzani comes in on loan from Braga to add punch up front.

There are problems to solve straight away. Louis Mouton is a doubt with a meniscus issue picked up a couple of months ago, leaving Gilli to juggle his options for the opener.

History does not help the mood. Angers are winless in their last nine Ligue 1 outings and have managed just one domestic away victory in the entire calendar year. They have also failed to score in their last two opening-day away fixtures since they last won one, back in 2021.

The likely XI reflects a side trying to blend stability with new blood: Lopes in goal; a back four of Arcus, Camara, Lefort and Ekomie; Belkhdim and van den Boomen in the engine room; Sbai, Bermont and Allevinah supporting lone forward El Ouazzani.

Lille: Ancelotti Jr steps into the spotlight

On the other bench, there is change of a very different kind. After a strong 2025-26 campaign, Lille hand the reins to Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti, and ask him not just to maintain standards but to chase silverware.

He inherits a side in good health. Pre-season brought three wins from four, just one defeat and 11 goals scored. The attack looks sharp, the structure familiar.

He also follows a successful act. Bruno Genesio delivered back-to-back seasons of 60 points or more before departing for Marseille, restoring Lille as a consistent force near the top. Those are the “big shoes” Ancelotti steps into, but the platform is solid.

Lille finished last season as one of the division’s toughest travellers. They went unbeaten in their final seven away league matches, conceding only twice in that run. Another clean sheet on Sunday would make it four straight Ligue 1 away games without letting one in.

Their recent record against Angers is just as ruthless: four consecutive top-flight wins over Les Scoïstes, all without conceding. Stretch that to five this weekend and the pattern starts to look like a stranglehold.

There is one notable absentee. Hamza Igamane remains sidelined as he recovers from a cruciate ligament tear suffered earlier this year.

But Lille still bring star power. Olivier Giroud, World Cup winner and one of the great penalty-box forwards of his generation, begins what he has said will likely be his final season as a professional, with his 40th birthday looming in September. Every appearance now carries a sense of farewell.

Ancelotti’s probable lineup has Ozer in goal; Santos, Ngoy, Alexsandro and Perraud across the back; Andre and Bouaddi anchoring midfield; Mukau, Haraldsson and Correia supplying the bullets for Fernandez-Pardo up front.

Prediction

Angers have experience, fresh faces and a coach desperate to prove himself. What they lack is evidence they can consistently trouble a side as complete and settled as Lille.

With Lille’s defensive record on the road, their recent dominance in this fixture and the attacking rhythm shown in pre-season, the visitors look a step ahead.
