Lewis Koumas Shows Promise in Liverpool's Pre-Season Defeat
At Anfield on Sunday, the scoreline said defeat. For Lewis Koumas, the afternoon still felt like a step forward.
The 20-year-old Wales international was trusted with a start in Liverpool’s 3-2 pre-season loss to AS Monaco and stayed on the pitch for 75 minutes, another sizeable chunk of senior football in a stadium that still has the power to jolt young players.
Koumas spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City, a spell that toughened him up and pushed him closer to first-team level. Now back on Merseyside, he’s living every academy player’s daily dream: training with Liverpool’s senior stars and trying to close the gap.
He doesn’t hide how much that matters.
He trains with them every day, studies them, and looks to lift pieces of their game into his own. The contact time is changing him. Physically, he says, this is the best he has ever felt, and his focus is on simple repetition: keep training, keep pushing, keep closing in.
On the touchline, Andoni Iraola’s message has been equally clear. The head coach wants Koumas to play his natural game, to press, to work, to run, and to keep adapting to the demands of a system built on intensity. No shortcuts, no hiding places.
Being back at Anfield brought its own surge of energy. Koumas relished the noise, the backing, the sense of occasion that a pre-season friendly in this stadium still carries. He felt the crowd with him, felt the lift that only a full Kop can provide.
There were chances, too. Not taken this time, but the positions were there, the runs were right. Koumas knows the rest is repetition and ruthlessness: keep arriving in the box and, sooner or later, the finish will follow.
For a 20-year-old trying to carve out a place in a demanding first-team environment, that mix of trust, minutes and clear instruction might prove more important than the result on the day.
