Kompany Addresses Musiala's Medication Change and Collapses
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany says a change in Jamal Musiala’s medication triggered the worrying collapses the midfielder suffered in recent friendlies.
Musiala, 23, revealed earlier this week he is being treated for what he called a “neurological dysfunction”, which causes “temporary, brief, but easily treatable” seizures. Bayern later confirmed they had detected signs of the condition before the World Cup and were fully aware of it ahead of last season, though it had not previously affected him on the pitch.
The situation changed this month.
Speaking before Saturday’s German Supercup clash with Borussia Dortmund, Kompany explained that a “slight” adjustment to Musiala’s treatment coincided with two collapses in four days, against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim.
“I spoke with Jamal, he said, ‘no problem, you can say it’,” Kompany told reporters, making it clear the player had given his blessing for the details to be shared.
“He made a slight change to his treatment, which caused some side effects. It’s perfectly normal to make changes to a treatment plan,” the Bayern coach said.
The first scare, Kompany suggested, is already in the past inside the club.
“The initial shock for us was a long time ago. Therefore, we’re not talking about it that much at the moment,” he said. “We’ve received much more information since then and made decisions with the help of leading experts. Jamal has everyone’s support.”
Bayern close ranks around their playmaker
Inside Säbener Straße, Musiala’s condition is no secret.
Sporting director Max Eberl underlined that the club, the squad and the player have been living with it for some time, and that Musiala himself wanted it made public.
“We’ve known about it the entire last season. The players also knew about it. For us, it’s become part of everyday life,” Eberl said.
“We will give him all our support, have already done so, and will continue to do so. We’re doing this together.”
That unity now shapes Bayern’s immediate plans. Musiala will not feature in the Supercup opener against Dortmund. Kompany has also ruled out Lennard Maloney and Serge Gnabry.
The priority is to steady the situation and remove any remaining uncertainty.
Kompany made it clear he wants to “get things back to how they were before”. To do that, Bayern will take Musiala out of the firing line for a few days. The midfielder is set to train “individually” for the rest of the week as the medical team fine-tunes his treatment.
Then comes the next checkpoint: the start of Bayern’s Bundesliga title defence against Stuttgart, and the question that will hang over the champions until kick-off – when will their gifted playmaker be ready to step back into the spotlight?
