Julian Alvarez Saga Stalls as Arsenal Pursuit Fails
Arsenal have been left staring at a closed door in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, with the Atletico Madrid striker showing no interest in a move to North London this summer.
According to The Sun, Arsenal are viewed as the only realistic Premier League option for the Argentina international in this window. It does not matter. Alvarez is not entertaining the idea of swapping Madrid for the Emirates.
The forward, who joined Atletico from Manchester City for £81.5 million two years ago, sits at the centre of a tug-of-war that has barely moved an inch. Arsenal and Barcelona have both been linked, but the only concrete move so far has come from Catalonia.
Barcelona tested Atletico’s resolve with an opening bid of £86.4 million. It was knocked back.
Talks between the two LaLiga clubs are described as being at a “standstill”, and that word fits the mood perfectly: everyone is watching, nobody is budging.
Inside the Metropolitano, there is no sense of panic. Diego Simeone’s side are said to be confident Alvarez will remain in the Spanish capital beyond this summer, a stance strengthened by the player’s reluctance to push for an exit.
For Arsenal, that confidence in Madrid feels like a brick wall. They may be the only viable Premier League destination on the table, but that counts for little when the player is unconvinced and the selling club is in no rush.
At 26, Alvarez is approaching what should be the peak of his career. The fee Atletico paid, the rejected Barcelona offer and the calm in Simeone’s camp all point in the same direction: if anyone wants to prise him away now, it will take serious money and even more persuasion.
The window still has time to twist. For the moment, though, the story of Julian Alvarez is rooted firmly in Madrid, and the clubs circling him are left waiting to see if that stance cracks before the summer clock runs out.
