Joshua Zirkzee’s Uncertain Future at Manchester United: Juventus Eye Loan

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United career is drifting, and Juventus can see an opportunity.

The Dutch striker, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2024 under Erik ten Hag with the weight of expectation and a sizeable fee, has never truly convinced the Stretford End. Now, with his future beyond this summer uncertain, Juventus are in advanced talks over a loan deal that would include a £30million option to buy.

For United, it is a stark reflection of where Zirkzee stands. For Juventus, it is a calculated move for a forward they believe still has room to grow.

A talent that never quite took off

Zirkzee’s numbers at United tell their own story. Five goals in 56 Premier League appearances is a return that jars with his reputation and his transfer fee. Across his time in M16, he has failed to nail down a regular starting role, unable to convince either Ruben Amorim or Michael Carrick that he should lead the line.

He has shown flashes. There was a reminder of his ability in United’s 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg last Friday, where he impressed and looked like the player the club thought they were signing. Yet those moments have been too rare when the games have mattered.

The 25-year-old finds himself firmly behind Benjamin Sesko and Mateus Cunha in the current pecking order. The possible return of Marcus Rashford to a central role would push him even further towards the margins. For a forward in his mid-twenties, these are dangerous years to spend on the fringes.

A player who still believes

Despite the noise around him, Zirkzee is said to be content to stay and fight. He wants to earn a place in Carrick’s plans and believes that European football in 2026/27 will open more doors for him at Old Trafford.

He actually wanted to leave in January, only to be blocked by United, who at that point were unwilling to sanction a move. That stance has softened. The club are now understood to be open to his departure, recognising that his United career has stalled and that a clean break might suit all parties.

United spent around £36.5m to bring him in two years ago, yet are prepared to accept a loan with a £30m buy option. Internally, there is an acceptance that this figure better reflects his current value, given his failure to deliver consistent performances in the Premier League.

Juventus change course

The opening came from Turin. Juventus had been working on a move for France international Kolo Muani after his unsuccessful loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur last season. Talks with Paris Saint-Germain dragged, the fee proved a sticking point, and the deal stalled.

So they pivoted.

Juve have now moved quickly for Zirkzee, with talks described as advanced and the Italian club seen as the most serious contender for his signature. The structure suits them: a loan to test the fit, a £30m option to make it permanent if he delivers.

Roma have also maintained a long-standing interest in the forward, but Juventus are reportedly ahead in the race, having accelerated discussions and made their intentions clear.

A return to familiar ground

For Zirkzee, Serie A is not a leap into the unknown. He knows the league, its rhythms and its demands. A loan spell at Parma and two seasons at Bologna gave him a taste of Italian football and, crucially, a platform where his style seemed more at home.

The Dutchman is said to view Serie A as a better tactical fit for his game: a league where his movement, link-up play and technical qualities can be more prominent than the relentless physicality and tempo of the Premier League.

His representatives have reportedly responded positively to Juventus’ approach. They see a club with a clear need for a striker, a system that could suit him, and a league where he has already shown he can operate.

United at a crossroads with Zirkzee

From United’s perspective, the equation is simple but uncomfortable. They invested heavily in a forward who has not become the player they hoped. He now sits behind Sesko and Cunha, with Rashford’s potential reintroduction to the central role looming over him. Carrick needs goals and certainty; Zirkzee has offered neither consistently.

A loan to Juventus with a sizeable option to buy would ease the wage bill, potentially bring in a significant fee next summer, and clear space in a crowded attacking department. It would also give Zirkzee the regular football he craves at a high level.

The question is no longer whether he has talent. It is whether that talent will ever fully surface in Manchester.

Juventus are betting it might flourish in Turin instead.
