Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United chapter is already edging towards its final pages. The club are open to a sale, the player is weighing his escape routes, and Europe’s recruiters have started to circle.

According to The Athletic, the Dutch forward has become a significant name on this summer’s market. Two unnamed Premier League clubs have quietly sounded out his situation, testing the water on a deal for a striker who arrived with fanfare but never quite settled into the unforgiving rhythm of English football. Ajax also made contact to understand United’s position, only for their interest to cool once Marcos Leonardo and Tolu Arokodare walked through the door in Amsterdam and filled their attacking quota.

So the picture sharpens elsewhere.

In Italy, Juventus are driving the hardest. The Turin club are working on a loan move, pushing to bring Zirkzee back to Serie A, where his reputation was forged. The 23-year-old has, by all accounts, given his approval to the idea. A return to a league that once showcased his touch, his movement, his feel for space. A league that made United pay £36.5 million for him in 2024.

That fee carried weight. Zirkzee had just come off a standout 2023–24 campaign with Bologna, a season that framed him as one of Serie A’s most intriguing forwards: technically polished, clever between the lines, capable of linking play as well as finishing it. United thought they were buying the finished article, or something close to it.

The Premier League thought otherwise.

Across the past two seasons, he has managed only 19 starts in 56 league appearances. Five goals. For a centre-forward at a club of United’s scale, those numbers tell their own story. That is the paradox clubs are now trying to solve: a forward whose ceiling still excites, but whose Premier League output drags down his price and complicates the negotiation. For United, a loan to Juventus would offer a chance to rebuild his value and clear space in a crowded attacking department. For Zirkzee, it could be a lifeline back to a league that suits his game and a stage where his instincts feel natural again.
