Jamal Musiala Reveals Treatable Absence Seizures Diagnosis
Jamal Musiala has revealed he is living with “treatable absence seizures” after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in four days, but insists there is no long-term threat to his health or his career.
The Bayern Munich and Germany star went down just eight minutes after coming on as a substitute in a pre-season friendly against FC Heidenheim on Tuesday night. It was a jarring repeat of a similar incident in Saturday’s game against RB Leipzig, when he also suddenly fell to the turf.
This time, Musiala chose to address the situation head-on.
Musiala explains diagnosis
In a detailed Instagram post, the 23-year-old moved quickly to calm fears around his condition and to explain what has been happening.
“First things first, I am doing well. I am incredibly grateful for your messages and your support!” he wrote, before outlining the diagnosis: brief, temporary, but treatable absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction.
Those seizures, he said, can trigger exactly the kind of collapses that stunned team-mates, opponents and supporters in the Leipzig and Heidenheim friendlies. They look frightening. Musiala knows that. But he stressed that, for now, they are part of his everyday reality and are being managed.
He underlined that he is receiving “excellent medical care” and described himself as “very optimistic”, highlighting the backing of both FC Bayern and his personal support network as he navigates the condition.
No additional health risk – and a clear decision
Crucially for Bayern and Germany fans, Musiala was explicit: according to the specialists treating him, there is no further health risk involved.
In his post, he explained that after close and regular consultation with neurological experts, he made a personal decision – with full medical clearance – to continue playing and living as normally as possible. Football, he said, is not just his job but part of what helps his recovery: simply living his life and pursuing his passion.
“I have taken full responsibility for this decision,” he wrote, adding that he feels “very positive” and believes he is on the right track.
The forward framed his competitive drive as part of his way through the challenge. Continuing to chase victories and titles with Bayern, backed by the support of fans, is what he says helps him most on this journey.
A public explanation, a private battle
Musiala’s message was both open and guarded. He wanted to explain enough to ease concern, but also drew a clear line.
He said he hoped his statement would help people understand the situation, while asking for respect for his wish to keep the matter private from now on, sharing details only with his closest circle, the club and the medical experts.
For Bayern, the diagnosis at least brings clarity after two unsettling scenes in quick succession. For Musiala, it sets the terms of a new reality: a world-class talent, under close medical supervision, determined to keep deciding games rather than letting a diagnosis define him.
