Jamal Musiala's Health Update: Diagnosis and Future Outlook
Jamal Musiala’s latest health scare sent a jolt through Bayern Munich this week, after the playmaker collapsed on the pitch for the second time in four days.
The 23-year-old went down during a friendly win over Heidenheim, appearing dazed and disoriented before receiving treatment and being helped from the field. The incident came hot on the heels of a similarly alarming episode against RB Leipzig, when he also needed medical attention after collapsing.
Diagnosis after a worrying week
Musiala later released a statement confirming he has been diagnosed with temporary, brief absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction. The label is clinical; the images were anything but. Twice in less than a week, Bayern’s No. 10 left the pitch under clear distress.
Sporting director Max Eberl has moved quickly to stress the club’s support, making it clear Bayern are fully aware of the situation and are standing firmly behind the player as he undergoes assessment and treatment.
To help frame what Musiala is facing, German outlet BILD spoke with Prof. Christoph Kleinschnitz, head of neurology at the University Hospital Essen, who offered a sober but reassuring perspective.
“From a neurological perspective, this could potentially be an epileptic seizure. It could be a form of absence epilepsy, as symptoms such as brief periods of unresponsiveness are consistent with it,” he explained.
He was careful to underline that a definitive classification depends on the full battery of neurological tests.
“However, we would need to know all the findings from the neurological examinations to make that assessment. It is highly treatable, but would require long-term therapy. Musiala can continue playing football.”
That last line will echo loudest around Säbener Straße.
Another battle after brutal injuries
For Musiala, the timing is cruel. He is trying to stitch his career rhythm back together after a brutal run of injuries. The attacking midfielder missed a major portion of the 2025-26 season following a fractured fibula combined with a dislocated and broken ankle suffered at the Club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain.
Those orthopaedic injuries alone demanded months of rehabilitation, conditioning work, and the mental grind that comes with starting again from almost zero. Just as he looked to be building momentum, a new, very different challenge emerged.
Now the task is twofold: continue managing the legacy of those serious leg injuries while adapting to a neurological condition that requires careful, long-term oversight.
Treatment, trust, and the season ahead
The message from specialists is clear: with proper therapy and monitoring, Musiala’s professional career should not be derailed. The condition is considered highly treatable, and his ability to keep playing at the highest level is not in doubt if the treatment plan is followed.
Inside Bayern, the focus is on structure and stability. Medical staff, Eberl, the coaching team, and Musiala’s inner circle are aligned around a single priority: his health. The player himself has expressed optimism about his routine and treatment, a crucial signal for a squad that leans heavily on his creativity.
Attention now inevitably turns to the new season. Bayern want their No. 10 fully integrated as they pursue trophies on every front, but the timeline will be dictated by doctors, not fixtures. No one at the club will risk rushing him back.
Family, friends, and the club remain close as he navigates this next phase of his career. The supporters, who have already watched him fight back from one major setback, will wait for the only clearance that matters now — the final green light from the medical team that says Jamal Musiala can step onto the pitch and stay there.
