Jamal Musiala's Neurological Challenge and Bayern's Strategic Response
The images from mid-August were unsettling. In a friendly against RB Leipzig, Jamal Musiala suddenly went down on the pitch. Bayern won 3-1, but the result barely mattered. At that point, almost nobody outside the club knew what was really going on.
Musiala was dealing with a neurological dysfunction that triggers so‑called absence seizures. Bayern had been aware of it for a long time – the entire previous season, according to Sport Bild – but the wider public was in the dark.
Crisis Meeting on Säbener Straße
Two days after the Leipzig game, the matter moved behind closed doors. At Bayern’s headquarters on Säbener Straße, a high‑level meeting was called: board member for sport Max Eberl, sporting director Christoph Freund, Musiala himself, his management and one of the doctors treating him sat down to decide what came next.
The club bosses, already informed about his condition for months, pushed for transparency. They wanted the health issue made public now, before speculation spiralled.
Musiala wasn’t ready.
So they agreed on a line. According to the report, the compromise was simple and brutal: if he collapsed again during a match, he would go public. No more hiding, no more waiting.
That moment arrived almost immediately. One day later.
Second Collapse, Immediate Statement
In the friendly at 1. FC Heidenheim, which Bayern won 4-2, Musiala went down again. This time, the plan kicked in.
Straight after the game, he published a statement on Instagram. The text had been prepared in consultation with the club, but the words were his. The world finally learned what Bayern and Musiala had been managing in private.
The collapses did not come out of nowhere. They followed a change in his treatment. After the World Cup, the medication used to control his illness had been reduced. The balance tipped.
“He reduced it a little, now we have to increase it a little again,” Eberl explained recently. The medical team is now readjusting the dose. That process is not instant. It can take up to 14 days before the new level takes full effect.
Until then, there is no risk taken. Musiala is out of team training, working only individually.
A Call From Klopp
The reaction to his announcement was huge. Among the many messages, one stood out.
According to Sport Bild, new Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp picked up the phone. He called Musiala personally, assured him of his full support and underlined a clear message: the Bayern playmaker remains central to his plans for the national team.
The conversation left a mark. Musiala is said to have been impressed by Klopp’s words and the way his new Bundestrainer reached out at a vulnerable moment.
Contract Signed Before Illness Emerged
Sport Bild also shed light on Musiala’s contract situation. When he signed his current deal in February 2025, worth around €25 million per year, the absence seizures had not yet occurred.
That timing matters. Because the condition had not appeared at the point of signing, there are no special clauses or health‑related safeguards in the contract. Bayern committed to one of their crown jewels without any reference to the issue that would later emerge.
When Will Musiala Be Back?
On the pitch, the next question is obvious: when will he play again?
Sport Bild reports that Musiala will not be in contention for Bayern’s Bundesliga opener on Friday against VfB Stuttgart. The club will not rush him for the sake of one game.
Matchday two looks more realistic. A comeback eight days later away to Schalke is considered the likelier scenario, assuming the medication settles as planned and training loads can be increased.
The calendar adds another layer of intrigue. Klopp will announce his first Germany squad as national coach on 17 September. By then, Musiala could already be back in competitive action, pushing to reclaim his place in a rebuilt national team.
Kompany’s Backing and Bayern’s Internal Climate
Inside the club, Musiala’s situation is being handled with care – and, by all accounts, with conviction.
Sport Bild reports that he is very happy with Bayern’s approach in this difficult phase. A personal conversation with head coach Vincent Kompany underlined that. The Belgian made his view clear: since Kompany’s arrival in 2024, Bayern have not seen Musiala at a higher level than now.
Kompany has echoed that publicly. “I know that he has made huge progress this summer. Look at the minutes he has played. He has done things that were not on the same level as our best players, but one level higher. We have not seen Jamal like this since his injury against Paris,” he stressed.
So the picture is paradoxical. Medically, caution. Sportingly, praise at its highest.
Bayern believe they have a version of Musiala who has gone beyond even his own previous standards. Germany’s new coach has already told him he is indispensable. The only missing piece is the one everyone is waiting for: the moment he steps back into a competitive game and shows whether this new, improved Jamal Musiala can carry that momentum through an entire season.
