Jamal Musiala Addresses Absence Seizures Diagnosis
Jamal Musiala has revealed he is living with “treatable absence seizures” after collapsing on the pitch for the second time in four days, but insists there is no long-term threat to his health or his career.
The Bayern Munich winger went down just eight minutes after coming on as a substitute in a pre-season friendly against FC Heidenheim on Tuesday night, a worrying repeat of the incident that halted play during Saturday’s game against RB Leipzig.
Both times, the 23-year-old suddenly fell to the turf, leaving team-mates, staff and supporters visibly alarmed. This week, he chose to address those fears head-on.
Speaking in a detailed Instagram post, Musiala moved quickly to reassure fans: “First things first, I am doing well. I am incredibly grateful for your messages and your support!”
He then explained the diagnosis that has followed medical checks over the past days. “I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary – but treatable – absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction,” he wrote.
Those seizures, he said, can trigger the kind of collapses seen against Leipzig and Heidenheim. They look dramatic. They stop a stadium cold. For Musiala, though, they have become part of a new, carefully managed reality.
“I know they might look alarming at first glance, but for me, they are currently part of my everyday life. I am receiving excellent medical care and remain very optimistic. FC Bayern and my personal support network are right by my side, helping me through this.”
The key line, for Bayern and Germany supporters, came next: “Importantly, there is no further health risk involved.”
Musiala stressed that, after extensive consultation with neurologists and club doctors, he has been cleared to continue playing and wants to do exactly that.
“In close consultation and regular contact with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge; with the medical clearance of the neurologists, I want to continue doing what helps my recovery most: simply living my life and pursuing my passion for playing football.
“I have taken full responsibility for this decision. Overall, I feel very positive and am on the right track.”
For a player whose game is built on freedom, flair and constant movement between the lines, the idea of stepping away was never likely to sit easily. He made clear what he believes will drive him forward: “What helps me most on this journey is continuing to chase victories and titles with my team and with your amazing support.”
Musiala also drew a line around how much more he wants to share. He asked for understanding as he tries to manage the condition away from the spotlight.
“I hope this helps you understand the situation better. At the same time, I ask for your understanding regarding my wish to keep this matter private, sharing it only with my closest circle, the club, and the medical experts.”
The message was calm, controlled and deliberate. Bayern’s creative heartbeat intends to keep playing, keep competing, and keep his private battle exactly where he wants it: in the background, while the football stays front and centre.
