Jacy's Viral Goal Celebration Fall at Couto Pereira

For a few seconds at the Couto Pereira Stadium, Jacy Maranhao was living every defender’s dream. Then gravity took over.

The Coritiba captain had just crashed a header into the net against Chapecoense in the 2026 Brasileirao on Saturday, peeled away in delight and, swept up in the moment, hurdled the advertising boards to celebrate. Instead of finding his family, he vanished.

One leap. One barrier. Then nothing – Jacy dropped straight through the open access to the stairs and tunnel leading down to the dressing rooms.

The footage raced around social media within hours: the Brazilian defender disappearing from view, then re-emerging seconds later, hauling himself back up, stumbling onto the pitch and trying to pick up the celebration as if nothing had happened. His teammates laughed, the crowd roared, the clip looped endlessly online.

The joke, though, was on him twice over. VAR soon stepped in and ruled the goal offside.

Jacy, who had to be substituted in the second half with pain in his foot, watched from the sidelines as Coritiba still finished the job, beating Chapecoense 2–1. The three points stayed in Curitiba; the moment belonged to the internet.

After the match, the 30-year-old defender admitted he had simply lost himself in the rush.

He said he had been “carried away” – understandable for a centre-back who doesn’t often see his name on the scoresheet. In an interview with local media, he explained that he had wanted to celebrate close to his pregnant wife in the stands, misjudging the layout in the heat of the moment and forgetting the tunnel opening sat just beyond the boards.

“When I jumped... you know that feeling when you dream you're falling from a building? That's what it was like,” he said, summing up the surreal drop that left the stadium gasping.

The tunnel entrance at Couto Pereira is usually closed during play and only opened at the end of each half. This time, timing turned cruel. The incident happened just before halftime, with the access already unlocked and open, waiting for the players. Jacy found it first.

What began as a scare ended, thankfully, with relief. The defender later posted on social media that he was on the mend.

“At first it was more of a scare than anything else. During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn't really put weight on it, but today I'm feeling much better and recovering well,” he wrote, reassuring worried supporters and amused neutrals alike.

Couto Pereira, oddly, has seen this kind of thing before. In 2014, Cameroonian striker Joel Tagueu also tumbled into the same tunnel while celebrating a goal for Coritiba. Another goal, another fall, the same treacherous gap.
