Hull City vs Manchester United: Premier League Opener Analysis
The first 12.30pm BST kick-off of the new Premier League season throws Hull City straight into the deep end. Newly promoted, back in the big time, and staring down Manchester United at a packed MKM Stadium.
Tigers lean on promotion core
Sergej Jakirovic has kept faith with the players who dragged Hull up from the Championship. Eight of today’s starting XI came with him from the second tier, a clear message that this side will be built on continuity, not just the summer spending spree.
Hull have hit double figures for new signings, but only three of them start: Konstantinos Tzolakis in goal, Nobel Mendy in defence and Elliot Stroud further forward all make their full competitive debuts.
There’s just one change from Hull’s final pre-season friendly, with Mendy replacing fellow recent arrival Jens Hjerto-Dahl. That switch, and the personnel around it, strongly points to Jakirovic rolling out a wing-back system – a shape he used in bursts during the 2025/26 Championship campaign but kept under wraps over the summer.
In midfield, budget Fantasy Premier League managers will be watching closely. The £4.5m pair Charlie Slater and Matt Crooks both start in the engine room, tasked with setting the tone against United’s more vaunted names.
At the back, value is everywhere. Five £4.0m defenders are involved in the matchday squad, including Mendy, who goes straight into the starting XI and into the spotlight.

United spring an early surprise
On the other side, Manchester United arrive with expectation, questions, and an early jolt to their plans.
The headline is the absence of Amad Diallo. Tipped to play a key role this season, he misses out with what the BBC’s Simon Stone describes as a “niggle”. It’s a small word with potentially big implications for United’s attacking balance.
His place goes to Bryan Mbeumo, who steps into the XI after being benched in the defeat to AC Milan in United’s final pre-season outing. That change also allows Matheus Cunha to keep his spot in the side, the Brazilian retaining his role in a front line that will be under scrutiny from the first whistle.
There is only one tweak from that Milan friendly, but the bench tells its own story. Benjamin Sesko and Karl Darlow both make the squad despite missing the entire pre-season programme, a sign United are willing to accelerate their reintegration.
Then there’s Marcus Rashford. Out of a competitive United squad since December 2024, he returns to the bench, a significant name lurking in reserve and a possible game-changer if this opener turns cagey.
