Fruk has built his name in Croatia with Rijeka, earning a reputation for vision, craft and consistent attacking returns. On paper, he is exactly the type of profile Hull want as they prepare for the step up.
The race, though, is moving quickly – and not in a straight line.
Competition Bites as Ajax and Premier League Rivals Move In
Inside Rijeka, there is a note of restraint. Sources close to the club stress that “a deal is not as close as people are making out,” a reminder that these talks are still at a relatively early stage. Hull are in the conversation, but they are not alone.
Two other Premier League clubs have registered serious interest, while Dutch giants Ajax have also made contact. All four clubs have been in touch in recent days, turning what might have been a quiet negotiation into a crowded auction.
That matters. The more clubs at the table, the harder the deal becomes. Rijeka are expected to stand firm, seeking around £8–10 million for one of their key players, even with Fruk entering the final year of his contract. They know his value, and they know there is a market for him.
If Hull want him, they will have to move with conviction, not hope.
Jakirovic Link Gives Hull an Edge
This pursuit is not happening in isolation. It fits a broader recruitment plan that has been forming since promotion was secured. Manager Sergej Jakirovic is central to this. He knows Fruk well from their time together at Rijeka and is understood to see him as a natural fit for the creative role he wants to fill. That kind of pre-existing relationship is gold in a transfer window. The manager knows what he is getting, the player knows what will be asked of him.
Crucially, Fruk is said to be open to working with Jakirovic again. For Hull, that familiarity could be a decisive card to play in a tight race.
Ajax Pressure and a Professional Exit
The presence of Ajax changes the temperature. Their name alone carries weight, and their track record of developing attacking talent is a powerful selling point for any creative midfielder. Add two Premier League rivals into the mix and Hull’s margin for error narrows fast.

For Hull, that means meeting Rijeka’s valuation and convincing Fruk that his next step should be in East Yorkshire, not Amsterdam or elsewhere in the Premier League.

From Hull City’s perspective, this is exactly the type of chase that tests how serious a promoted club really is. Fruk is not a speculative punt. His numbers – 32 goals in 139 games – show he offers more than neat touches and tidy passing. He affects games.
The fee, £8–10 million, is not insignificant, especially with Ajax and domestic rivals circling. But this is the market Hull now live in. If they want players who can unlock deep defences, calm the team in the final third and turn tight matches, they have to be willing to compete for them.
There is also a sense of alignment here that should encourage supporters. Too often, promoted clubs sign players and then figure out the role later. This feels different: a manager who knows the player, a clear position in mind, and a profile that matches the demands of the league they are entering.
