Haaland Cleared to Start for Manchester City Against Arsenal
Erling Haaland has been cleared to start for Manchester City in Sunday’s Community Shield showdown with Arsenal, easing any late anxiety in the champions’ camp.
The Norwegian striker briefly alarmed supporters when he sat out the closing stages of Thursday’s open training session, but Enzo Maresca moved quickly to shut down any talk of a problem.
“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City boss said on Friday, underlining that his main marksman is available for Cardiff.
Haaland fit – but not guaranteed to start
Fitness is one thing. Match sharpness is another.
Haaland did not play a single minute in pre-season, handed an extended break after helping Norway reach the World Cup quarter-finals. So while he is medically ready, Maresca must decide whether to throw him straight into a competitive opener or hold him back as a high-impact option from the bench.
That decision is complicated by the form of Omar Marmoush. The forward comes into the curtain-raiser full of confidence after scoring twice in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid, staking a serious claim to lead the line from the first whistle.
If Maresca rewards Marmoush, Haaland could be kept in reserve, a daunting prospect for Arsenal’s defence later in the game. He scored twice in three meetings with the Gunners last season and remains City’s most ruthless weapon.
Midfield reshuffle as Reijnders departs
Behind the striker, City’s midfield will have a different look.
Tijjani Reijnders is on the verge of completing his move to Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League, with the deal expected to be finalised before kick-off. His exit forces Maresca to identify a new partner for Mateo Kovacic in the centre of the pitch.
Rico Lewis is firmly in that conversation after starting in midfield during the win over K-League Allstars, showing his versatility once again.
Then there is £116 million signing Elliot Anderson. The summer arrival could make his Manchester City debut against Arsenal, but timing may work against him. The England international has only just returned to training, as have Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki, which opens the door for Nico Gonzalez to step in and take responsibility from the start.
Rodri, meanwhile, is back at the club after minor back surgery. He remains in the rehabilitation phase, and the Arsenal clash is expected to come too soon for him to be involved, denying City their usual midfield anchor.
Ait-Nouri pushes for starting role
At the back, another pre-season standout is forcing the issue.
Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed over the summer and is now pushing hard for a starting berth at left-back. If Maresca rewards that form, Josko Gvardiol would likely slide inside to form a central defensive partnership with Ruben Dias, giving City a blend of aggression, balance and ball-playing ability at the heart of their back line.
With Haaland fit, Marmoush firing, the midfield in flux and the defence evolving, City arrive in Cardiff with familiar star power but a slightly different shape. For Arsenal, the question is simple: can they exploit that early-season uncertainty before this new version of City clicks into gear?
