GSS Investment in Montpellier with Ilkay Gundogan Involvement

Montpellier HSC, still reeling from a bruising spell in Ligue 2, stand on the brink of a major shake-up – and a familiar Premier League name is right in the middle of it.

According to L’Équipe, British investment fund GSS are in advanced talks to buy into the former French champions, with ex-Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan involved in the bid. The exact structure of the deal remains open, but the discussions are serious and gathering pace.

Nicollin’s reluctant pivot

This is not a sale born of ambition. It is one born of necessity.

Back in the 2024/25 season, club owner Laurent Nicollin publicly appealed for fresh money. He sent a ten-page dossier to major French investment banks, a document that laid bare both the club’s financial strain and his own conflicted stance.

“We are throwing a hook into the sea,” he wrote, making it clear he did not want to fully sell Montpellier. Yet the realities of the market and the club’s slide forced a more pragmatic tone. Nicollin admitted he might have to accept becoming a minority shareholder. “Our fall has to be less painful at the end of the year,” he added, a stark line that now reads like a prelude to what is unfolding.

Relegation bite and stalled revival

Montpellier’s descent to Ligue 2 for the 2025/26 campaign cut deep. The club that once stunned France by winning Ligue 1 suddenly found itself unable to even muscle into the promotion picture.

They failed to bounce straight back. Like Stade de Reims, relegated in the same season, they did not even reach the playoffs. The missed opportunity piled pressure on Nicollin’s project and accelerated the search for outside capital.

Now, as another summer opens, La Paillade could change hands in a way the city has not seen since the Nicollin family first took control.

GSS move in – with Gundogan on board

L’Équipe report that an agreement between GSS and Nicollin is edging closer. Whether this ends in a full takeover or a significant minority investment is still unclear, but the direction of travel is obvious: outside money is coming.

The presence of Ilkay Gundogan in the GSS-led bid gives the project a high-profile footballing face. The former Manchester City and current Barcelona midfielder brings top-level pedigree and instant recognition, a powerful signal at a time when supporters crave both credibility and a plan.

He is not alone. Daniel Karbassiyoon, who previously played for Arsenal, Burnley and Ipswich Town and later worked in scouting, is also involved in the proposal, adding another layer of football experience around the investment group.

The negotiations now move into a decisive phase. For Montpellier, the question is no longer whether they need help. It is how much of themselves they are willing to give up to get it.
