Fulham Break Northern Irish Transfer Record for Charles

Fulham have made their statement signing of the summer, completing a deal worth up to £30m for 22-year-old midfielder Charles and shattering the Northern Irish transfer record in the process.

The move, built around an initial £26m fee with a further £4m in performance-related add-ons, almost doubles the previous benchmark set when Jamal Lewis left Norwich City for Newcastle United in a £15m switch back in 2020. Charles now stands alone as the most expensive footballer in Northern Ireland’s history – and Fulham have tied him down to a five-year contract at Craven Cottage.

This is not just a numbers move. It is a clear reshaping of Marco Silva’s midfield.

With Sasa Lukic departing for Ipswich Town, Fulham moved aggressively to secure Charles, a former Manchester City academy product whose stock has risen sharply in recent seasons. Leeds United pushed hard, but the youngster chose west London, swayed by the project laid out in front of him.

The club’s hierarchy and coaching staff did not just sell him a squad role; they sold him a future. After direct talks with the coaches, Charles left convinced that Fulham’s long-term plan matched his own ambitions.

“I'm buzzing to finally get it over the line. The club has got a really good foundation, from the bottom to the top really.

“It's a great club, with a really good vision – the manager explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege. I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it's perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well.”

For Fulham, this is a calculated gamble on potential and personality, not just pedigree. For Charles, it is the doorway he has been waiting for: a Premier League platform, a long contract, and the weight of a national record fee on his shoulders.

Now he has to show why Fulham were willing to break new ground to bring him to the Cottage.
