Fiorentina have secured the 18-year-old on a season-long loan from Madrid, the clubs confirmed on Friday, handing one of the most hyped teenagers of his generation a fresh stage and a softer spotlight.
From Bernabéu glare to Florence reset
When Madrid prised Mastantuono away from River Plate in June 2025, beating Paris Saint-Germain to his signature, it felt like a statement of intent. A six-year deal for an Argentina international who had already been tagged as a future star. The kind of move Madrid make when they believe they’ve found the next one, not just another one.
He arrived in Spain with a booming reputation. At River, he had broken into the first team at 16 and looked instantly at home. By June 2025, he had become the youngest player ever to appear for Argentina’s national team. The trajectory was steep, the expectations even steeper.
Reality in Madrid, though, hit harder than the highlight reels suggested.
Mastantuono managed 35 appearances across LaLiga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa last season, scoring three goals. The numbers sound respectable for a teenager, but the pattern tells the real story: more minutes early in the campaign, fewer as the season wore on. As the pressure games arrived, his influence faded. So did his place in the pecking order.
That dip cost him dearly. When Argentina named their World Cup squad, his name wasn’t on it.
A different kind of pressure
This is where Fiorentina come in. Serie A has long been a refuge and a launchpad for gifted attackers needing structure, patience and rhythm. Florence offers intensity, but not the relentless scrutiny of the Bernabéu.
For Mastantuono, it already feels significant.
"It's a special day for me," he said on Friday. "I was excited about joining the club... It's a team with a lot of history."
The move, officially running until June 30, 2027, gives him the one thing he never truly had in Madrid: time to grow without every touch being framed as a referendum on his potential. Fiorentina gain a left-footed winger who can glide inside, break lines and attack defenders one-on-one. Madrid keep control of a long-term asset who still has the ceiling that made them fight off PSG in the first place.
A career at a crossroads, early
It feels strange to talk about a crossroads for an 18-year-old, but elite football moves fast. Mastantuono has already lived several careers in miniature: academy prodigy, River sensation, record-breaking Argentina debutant, Madrid signing, World Cup omission.
Now comes the test that often separates the hype from the substance: can he turn raw promise into consistent impact, week after week, far from the noise that first crowned him?
Fiorentina believe he can. Madrid are betting he will.
