Enzo Fernández Joins Manchester City as Record Signing

Enzo Fernández walks into Manchester City not just as a record signing, but as the player many inside the dressing room were openly hoping for.

Manager Enzo Maresca revealed that in the frantic final days of the transfer window, several City players were checking in with one question: is Enzo coming?

“They want him to be with us,” Maresca said. “In the last four or five days, four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not.”

They have their answer. The 25-year-old Argentina international has arrived from Chelsea for a joint-British record £125m fee, and Maresca says he is “ready” to make his debut when newly promoted Coventry City visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

A World Champion in a rebuilt midfield

Maresca knows exactly what he is getting. The pair worked together at Chelsea, where the Italian made Fernández his captain. At City, the armband will stay elsewhere, but the expectations will not.

“I know Enzo quite well and I know what he can bring to the team,” Maresca said. “He is a winner – a winner’s mentality and knows how to win [after] the World Cup, Club World Cup.”

City have spent this summer reshaping the heart of their side around that mentality. Fernández joins Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi in a revamped midfield that alone cost £327m, part of a transfer window outlay of £458m – a record for the club.

Wingers Iliman Ndiaye and Allan have also come through the door, as has back-up goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. Sales have been aggressive too, with the club recouping more than £300m in departures.

Maresca made a point of crediting the hierarchy for backing such a sweeping rebuild.

“I am very happy for the effort from the ownership, [chairman] Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] and [director of football] Hugo [Viana]. Very happy,” he said. “In the last days, Iliman and Enzo arrived, and now the squad is complete – it’s finished. Now it is time to work.”

New leader, familiar edge

The armband call was always going to be scrutinised. Maresca confirmed Ruben Dias as the new City captain, replacing Bernardo Silva, who left in the summer. Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma will form part of the leadership group.

Fernández, then, arrives not as captain but as a standard-bearer of something Maresca clearly values: a dressing room stacked with serial winners.

“I just said he is a winner and when you belong to a squad and another winning player arrives, they are always happy,” the City boss explained. “It’s very important that he is with us and we are 100% happy with that.”

The reaction inside the squad backs that up. Players do not usually chase their manager for transfer updates unless they believe that signing changes something.

Chelsea in the rear-view mirror

If there was any doubt about where Fernández’s head is now, he removed it in an in-house City interview on Thursday. He said he had always “dreamed of being at a club as big as City” – a line that did not go unnoticed at Stamford Bridge.

His desire to leave Chelsea had been building since the turn of the year. Conversations with manager Xabi Alonso over the summer could not reverse it.

“In football many things happen,” Alonso said. “With Enzo we have had conversations and always with respect. What he has done for the club has been great, but now it's time to move forward.

“We have players with quality in every position and now we are ready to go.”

Chelsea move on. City move up a gear.

A debut loaded with expectation

Coventry City will not care for the narrative when they walk out at the Etihad, but the spotlight will be fixed on one man. A £125m midfielder, a World Cup winner, a player his new team-mates were urging the club to sign.

Maresca insists Fernández is ready. The squad is “complete”. The chequebook is closed.

Now comes the only part of the project that really counts: what Enzo Fernández does in sky blue when the whistle blows.
