England Faces Late Squad Changes Ahead of Nations League
England have been forced into a late reshuffle, with five players withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures.
Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Tino Livramento have all pulled out, leaving Tuchel to turn to Everton’s James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White to plug the gaps.
Injuries bite as Tuchel’s plans shift
Palmer’s absence will sting. Recalled after the storm over his World Cup omission, the Chelsea forward was set to be a central figure in Tuchel’s attacking plans before a minor injury ruled him out.
At Manchester United, the concern was immediate. Mainoo and Rashford were both taken off late in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham and assessed by the club. Neither has been passed fit to report for international duty.
Rice, ever-present and influential for Arsenal, completed the full 90 minutes in their 3-0 defeat by Brighton but will also miss out. Livramento, restricted to just three substitute appearances for Newcastle this season, joins him on the unavailable list.
Five out. All in different areas of the pitch. Tuchel’s carefully drawn blueprint suddenly needs redrawing.
Garner and Gibbs-White step into the gap
The call has gone out to Garner and Gibbs-White, who will join up with the squad on Tuesday.
Gibbs-White’s inclusion has been coming. Tuchel admitted on Friday that the 26-year-old, already capped six times, was close to making the original squad. His form and leadership at Forest have pushed him back into the conversation, and now circumstances have opened the door.
Garner, meanwhile, returns after also missing out on the 2026 World Cup squad. The Everton midfielder made both of his two senior England appearances in March and now finds himself back in the fold at a moment when Tuchel needs reliability and energy in midfield.
This is not the squad Tuchel first named. It is, however, the one he has to shape into a Nations League force. The question now is simple: can England’s next wave turn an injury crisis into an opportunity?
