Cuca Weighs Neymar's Participation on Synthetic Turf Against Palmeiras

Santos boss Cuca admits he still does not know if Neymar will face Palmeiras on the controversial artificial pitch at Allianz Parque, insisting the decision will only come after talks inside the dressing room.

Speaking ahead of a demanding away trip, Cuca made it clear nothing has been settled on his star forward’s involvement. As quoted by ESPN Brazil, he said: "I don't have an answer to that yet, but tomorrow when we report back, we'll see how the whole squad is doing. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and with the entire squad so we can decide what to do."

He knows exactly what awaits on Wednesday. "The match against Palmeiras is going to be very tough; they are a very good side, and it's impossible to deny they are the favourites. But we'll work hard to do our best on Wednesday."

The pitch, though, hangs over everything.

Neymar’s resistance to artificial grass is no secret. It hardened after an ankle sprain against Atletico Mineiro, an injury that left him furious with the surface and ready to vent publicly. On social media, he didn’t bother with diplomacy: "It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***."

That anger has not faded. The Allianz Parque turf, in particular, has long been in his sights.

Pressed in the mixed zone after Santos’ 2-1 Copa Sudamericana win over Macara, Neymar refused to be drawn into confirming whether he would play against Palmeiras. His response was sharp, almost dismissive of the rush to talk about the midweek clash. "Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday. I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf]."

The hesitation fits perfectly with what he has said before about the venue. For Neymar, Allianz Parque is more than just an away ground; it is a surface he simply does not trust.

"Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible. Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries. Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch."

Those words frame the dilemma facing Santos.

Cuca needs his main attacking reference for a meeting with one of Brazil’s strongest sides, on a stage where Palmeiras rarely slip. Neymar, though, sees the turf as a risk to his body and a betrayal of what elite football should look and feel like.

So the decision now moves behind closed doors. Coach, squad, and superstar forward will sit down, weigh risk against reward, and decide if Neymar walks out at Allianz Parque or watches one of the season’s sternest tests from the sidelines.
